Hi, I really need help with this one.......I have a 4 yr. old Boxer, his name is Nixon, we adopted him from a rescue group in Florida 3 years ago, almos from day one, he has had a bit of blood on his anus when he defecates, sometimes he even dripped a little blood. I took him to the vet who said he had "hook worms" and treated him, the blood never stopped, I changed vets and asked if dogs can get hemorroids but was told no, now when he defecates, a little red bloody tip protrudes from his anus, when he is done, it goes back inside, it does not seem to bother him but it has me very worried. Can someone out there help?

Dogs cannot get hemroids. He may have polyps or cysts along his colon. Have they done rectal exams on him? Where they stick their fingers in it and feel the lining of the colon? Has he ever had anal gland problems? We recently had a dog who wouldn't potty because it hurt so bad, we went in and surgically removed all the little masses along her colon and turns out the were harmless little polyps.

Thanks for the info, he actually has what looks like a small bit of tissue which sticks out when he goes, afterwards, it goes back inside, he always has a bit of blood on his anus after going. I guess a visit to the vet is in order. What is weird is that the two vets which he has had in his life, never did the exams you recommend, although I told them about the blood, it has gotten worst in the last few weeks so off to the vet we will go. Thanks again.

...rectal exams aren't generally the first resort. But, when nothing else seems to be working...and since you are mentioning a growth of some sort, I certainly think that warrants an exam of the rear. :)

i suggest you consult a vet now to know what's happening to your dog.
