There is a law in the process of getting passed that will make Declawing cats for any reason that is not a medical emergency ILLEGAL!!

I am VERY excited about this, and i hope that it passes and other states follow suit.

here is the link to the article on the ASPCA website

Declawing Law in Connecticut (http://aspcacommunity.ning.com/group/catsville/forum/topic/show?id=658300%3ATopic%3A167440)

There would be no need for a declaw law if there weren't still idiots like me walking around. Love for your cat and knowledge of their physical needs should be enough to tell anyone that declawing is totally abnormal and wrong.

Oh, I could sit down with you and talk to you for hours about the horrors of declawing, explain the process, tell you the after-effects, drag out horrible pictures to show you what really happens. That is called educating yourself which is just what I did after I brought my baby home after letting a vet talk me into mutilating her. That is better known as "too late." It took her almost a year to be able to walk almost normal, and now eight years later she is still the most vicious cat you could imagine but she is the love of my life. I will spend the rest of her life trying to make it up to her.

I too hope they make a law against this because there are just too many people that can't be trusted to make the right choice when it comes to choosing between the sofa and the cat that was such a surprise when they found out that it came equipped with claws and that they have a need to use them.

The problem is that some people really care more about the state of their furniture than the well being of their cat. I've never declawed a cat, and I never will. Even before I knew how it was done and the after effects I just thought it was a mean thing to do, once I started working with animals and found out how horrible it is I made it my goal to educate as many people as possible about the horrors of declawing. But honestly, a lot of people just don't care! Having a law in place would certainly decrease the amount of cats who are put through this unneeded torture.

aside from laws educating people about declawing will surely lessen this problem.

Yea.. i also read about a law that required vets to FULLY educate the "customer" about how the process is done.. Now, many vets just say that its a simple procedure with few complications, and thats right if the onyl complications you are talking about is death.. there are few deaths associated with delcawing.. so people feel safe about having it done, BUT when they find out that they chop if the first part of their toes and the emotional damage it is known to do, then there they are more likely to disagree with it..

But you're right, there are pLENTY of people out there that value the quality of life for their furniture MORE than their cat.

Just a week ago, someone on a sugar glider forum posted how they were getting their cats in to get declawed and they had concerns.. ofcoarse many people said JUST DONT DO IT and told her what it entailed, but she said that she had made up her mind, and her house would be more peacful if she had them declawed because she's always yelling at them to NOT scratch the moulding.. YEP.. moulding.. something you can paint over and over again to look like new.. NOT something that is permamenty damaged by scratching.. AND what kills me is that this person is SOOO "careful" of her sugar gliders that she only give the 100% natural organic stuff, a certain brand of spring water, and will not let them touch ANYTHING cotton for fear of their claws getting stuck.. all this concern for the wellfare of her gliders (which is good) but the cats, well, they are just "disposable"

I'm SURE if her sugar glider pooed on her walls, she wouldnt put a cork up there!!

AHHH i just HATE pepople

A lot of people who know whats done still choose to do it for conveince though! I think until it is their cat who is unable to stand, in constant pain, or worse-dead-they won't truly understand or care why the procedure is bad!

And I agree---AHHHH people!

I've also never heard about a law that requires vets to tell the owners about the procedure. Interesting. I remember when I took Calvin and Hobbes in for their fixin' the nurse tried to get me to book a declaw. When I said "no" she tried to convince me its totally safe and now they use lasers and blah blah blah, but I still said "no". Then I dropped them off on the morning of their spay/neuter and the receptionist said " So Calvin and Hobbes for a neuter and spay and declaw?" Without saying a word I picked their carrier up and left, and never returned to that clinic again.
