I need help. My dog ate a whole Chinese new year cake last night. It is called "gau" and the ingredients are basically just coconut milk, water, brown sugar and mochi powder. This is something very heavy, the whole cake he ate was something that could fill up 4 or 5 people's stomach.

He did not have any signs of diarrhea or vomit. But he does act sick today, he has an enlarged body and he is not really moving around today. I also noticed heavier breathing. Any idea if this is a situation that I should take him to the vet? Or is it going to pass eventually? I am guessing that it didn't get digested yet, and perhaps I should give him something that would help him digest??? Any idea???

It can definitely be bloat which can quickly turn fatal. Please get your dog to a vet ASAP. Don't give him anything in your house or OTC, you may make it worse. But, please....get to a vet and QUICK.

thanks for the input. I am getting really nervous now. But the vet won't be open until the next morning. IT's been more than 24 hours since he ate the cake. He had two small bowel movements since then. They were both dry, and seems painful to pass. And the amount was very very little. I am not sure if it means he is at least able to pass it and I should wait it out? Any idea what I can give him to help him pass it? Stool softener?

In the future if something happens 'after hours', you still should call your vet. Most vets have an message on their answering machine directing you to a 24 hour clinic, or a vet on call for the evening (or weekend). Unfortunately, not all mishaps with animals happen between 9-5pm.

I hope your dog is ok. You should have called the vet when you noticed the problem immediately. Also, never give human medications to dogs without concenting a vet first.

Don't wait...go to a vet. The ingredients in "gau" (the mochi powder especially) can "stick" inside the dog. Please get to a vet and let us know how he's doing.
