recently we took our 18 yr old cat to the vet for treatment of a rectal prolapse. the vet tried to push the rectum back in, but in less than a minute it came out again and the cat began bleeding profusely; this seemed to sap almost all its strength and the vet strongly suggested we euthanize him immediately; we reluctantly agreed as it was clear the cat was suffering greatly. admittedly he was very old and frail and possibly suffering from some serious gastrointestinal disorder as well.
but the vet said she had never seen a cat react so badly to efforts to push a prolapsed rectum back in.
does anyone have any theories as to what could have caused this bleeding?
