Thanks to new laws, we as petlovers can make a difference:

1. When going into a petshop, petstore, petsupermarket, etc., it is up to YOU to take a conscience tally on how the pets are taken care of. IF just one pet is in alarm (sick, injured) or in need of veterinary care it is within your right to demand they be helped, cared for. If there is non compliance, the petshop guy gives you grief, the girl at petsmart says "well it is Sunday and that cockatiel was taken to the vet last friday to get her eyes looked at...the vet is not in....I don't know what to do" That is abuse. That little bird is sitting out just almost dead in pain. Not fun. I know I would really be hating life if someone stuck me out there without my buddies or family. Poor little cockatiel chicken. He was so sick. I didn't call back to find out if cockatiel made it. I fear the worst but am optimistic. How can we continue to put these neat creatures on display....when they deserve so much more. Clean water for one, big place to hang out, and for Gods sake, let them stay with their families.

Number two and probably should be up there with number one: Call the cops if you see an animal abused. Pet or animal. The cops ARE animal contol. Tell em and maybe they will listen. If they don't....call em again. The number is 911

Our local Petsmarts are very good, at least the one Tiffers worked at was good while she was there. The one I go to now, the new one is great. I've yet to see a dirty cage, anyone without water, or any critter looking unhappy. However, the local Petco, I rarely go into because of the condition of their animals, and the fact that any of the fish tanks you look into has at any given time several dead fish! And the store always smells bad.

Oh, honey, thats why you SHOULD go. To help. Sometimes the workers and owners don't know the proper way to run a store that sells pets. I get a little coo-coo sometimes about animal rights. My heart is in the right place. I don't know the names of the laws that have been passed but I have signed many petitions and lobbied many congressman to pass certain bills. These bills have since gone through and become laws in many states. It is a slow and rigorous process.
Since I have become a member here I am so much more aware of the wrongdoings of petshops and similar. I really do think that 99.9 percent of the time the people who own and work at petshops have the right thing in mind. It is the .01 percent that burn my butt. Nobody is perfect. I am trying to make folks aware that we can help. I don't want to get people in trouble. I want them to learn as I have the right way to take care of and respect pets. Thats all. Sorry if I got a little wierd. Really just trying to help. I would not let fish lay dead in tanks, I certainly would not let birds be on display with really bad eye infections. I am in teaching mode. I want to help those who don't know but would be glad to learn and help.

The Petco's around us (me and ltlpistol) are strictly feeder animals. Rabbits, mice, rats, etc. It's all bait food. You go into the store and they will flat out tell you that. There have been a NUMBER of complaints as well, I know a few of our clients have made comments that they've made complaints and whatnot...but this area, it's not rich...and most of the people cannot afford the nicer store, PetSmart, so Petco will never close.

I was just in one today...there are sooooo many animals per cage half of them are passed out because it's so hot. There's no ventilation, they're fighting over the water bottles...it's ridiculous.
