Do lots of research.

Sun conures are very playful and beautiful, but very very loud and demanding.

:)

P.S. Lots of people buy them for their beauty.....but eventually can't deal with their screaming, loud nature and end up giving them up.

If you still think you want one after the reaserch check birdtalk magazine. Also do searches on the internet.

My parrot has two hearts one is mine.

Are you looking to purchase one or adopt one?

Done tons of reasearch. Thinking about a Gold Crowned Conure. They behave more. Or else a cockatiel.

A cockatiel would be a good choice, but there's also many types of conures that would be great too. It seems like most people go for sun conures because they're very common and colorful, so many many people miss out on the other kinds. Have you thought about a Half-moon conure? Dusky conure? Sharp-tailed conure? Souance's conure? Green conure? Orange-fronted conure? Maroon-bellied conure? There's many, many different kinds that all have slightly different pet qualities. As far as sun conures go, they can behave extremely well too and be just as good as any of the others, it just has to do with the owner. I think many start screaming problems because their owners spoil them since they are so cuddly and make them think that they are #1 in the house! Anyway, let us know what happens and good luck finding the right kind for you!

I have a feeling that you both are going to suggest pi's to every single member here! :D They must be terrific! However, as my duty to my two wonderful conures, I have to put in a few good words about them as well. :)

Jenny:

LOL. I love all birds, and all have wonderful traits, though I feel that the Pionus Parrots have very little exposure to the public. Perhaps it's because they became known only as far back as the 19th century or because some people think they are not as colorful as other species. Their personalities make up for it.

I would love avian lovers everywhere to know more about these precious, good natured, intelligent and beautiful species of parrots. They are worth looking into.

P.S. Conures are great....I love them too.

Just incase I'm not annoying enough, here is the site again:

hehehe

Ha-ha! I agree with you completely though. I know that they are great birds from articles I've read, a few I've met, and from hearing about yours, so they definitely do deserve more exposure. BTW, that site is really wonderful, so your'e not annoying me with it anyway! :)

I'd also suggest a pi!! They are so sweet. I have a white capped pionus. They are so adorable. Sophie is also quite intelligent. This morning I woke up late and went downstairs to feed her. When I uncovered her cage she looked at me and said Well it's about time. Well Pionus are wonderful. I love that site. I plan to buy Sophie the medium bird toy kit. It looks like Ton's of fun.

Jenny

I haven't ordered any of the toy kits yet, since i've been entering the little toy part contest each month, hoping to win one for free! Do you guys enter it? And that's so cute about Sophie! :)

I did. But I am still going to buy a toy kit. You how it is. You can never have enough bird toys. I have a cauldron(from an old Halloween costume)full of bird toys.

Jenny

It's at the www.pionusparrot.com site, and it's more like a survey that you just answer questions to about what you think of the site and stuff like that. Thats' true Allison- you never can have enough bird toys!!! :)

Ohhh Nooo. My appologies also, Grey. I just get so carried away at times.
What are your thoughts or decisions about getting your new bird? How did your research go?

Let us know, we'd be very glad to help you out....I'm sure.:)

Sorry. Pionus people like me always have to put in a word for our parrots and how wonderful they are. Sorry.

HI,
I was also looking to purchase a conure, leaning more towards the sun conure. I know their very loud and I can deal with that but is there any specific type of conure thats cuddly, goofy, well-behaved, maybe talkative and maybe quiter? I know any parrot is capable of being all those qualities but is their any conure like that?

Thank you

Kristy:)

Jenny

Green cheeked conures! They're cuddly...they're cute...they're goofy...they're well behaved, er, for the most part...they usually learn to say at least a few things...they're quiet...and are terrific! (Can you tell I"m owned by one?) If you want, you can go to "Parrot Pics" and click on "Jenny this is for you" to see mine. As far as any parrot being well-behaved though, that mostly depends on you, the owner (slave). I also have a sharp-tailed conure, and I'd recommend one of them too. You probably have heard of blue-crowned conures, and the two are closely related and very similar. If you've seen the movie "Paulie", then you know what a sharp-tailed looks like. As far as their talking ability, it is no where near "Paulie's", but is usually pretty good. Of course, you can't guarantee any parrot to talk. Some species known for talking talk hardly at all, and vice versa. There are many more species of conures that are great, but I personally love the Half-moon conures. You can read about them at www.joycesbirdroom.com, along with some other kinds. As far as which species of conures are quieter, generally the Pyhurra conures are quieter than the others, but don't get me wrong, they can be loud when they want to! And, if you really don't think a conure is for you after all... Pionus are great! ;) he-he Anyway, welcome to this site, and feel free to post and ask whatever questions you have! We're all happy to help you.

I went and did a search on the green cheeked and the blue crowned conures as well as the other species you mentioned. They all sound very nice!! I also saw the Jendaya conure, how are they does anyone have one here that they could talk about?? They are soo beautiful and so are the sun conures but I can't find too much on the Jendaya so if anyone has any info on them that they could refer me too please reply:p Thanks again for the fast replies!

Kristy:)

Ditto Jenny.

KristyS......After researching the conures, look up Pionus parrots, too. Don't leave any page unturned at this point.

Also, Welcome to the "Board"...I am sure you will find our suggestions and comments very useful and we look forward to your input, also.

My flock consists of: 1 tiel, 4 budgies, and 1 Maximillian Pionus Parrot.
They are all great fun.

Good luck.

:)

Hi KristyS,

Welcome to this board! Before I got my Blue-Headed Pionus, I considered & researched a variety of birds. Of the conure family, I particularly like the Half Moon. But due to the noise factor, I ended up getting a Pionus instead.

Good luck in your search and I hope you find the right one for you.

Thanks all:) I love that movie to Jenny! So sad about Ivy though.. There's this really cute sb Budgie at Horses 'R' Us so I think I'm getting him. I can't afford a Conure right now.:(

Pionus are such great companions. i have a white capped pionus and a budgie. In my experience they don't like to cuddle. The clown is still in for them but she isn't as big of a clown as my budgie is.

Budgies are wonderful birds (I have 4). If you keep a single one, there's a very good chance you can train it to talk and it will bond to you very well.

They are large parrot personalities rolled into a small package!!

Yes they are excellent companions.

KristyS: Jenday conures are very similar to sun conures in appearance and behavior. Another conure I didn't mention which sounds neat from what I've heard, yet receives little publicity, is the Dusky Conure. Another neat species is the Souance's conure. I got to play with two the other day, and they were real sweeties- they seem similar to my green-cheeked- but they're much rarer.
Grey: let us know how it goes with the budgie! :)

I have only one budgie, and she is very sweet. Her name is Tweety and she loves to give and receive kisses. She is very well potty trained and will poop on command. She does not like being held in my hand but will sit on my shoulder for hours. You have made a wise choice.
