...I've let you all down. I haven't posted any good pictures in a LONG time. So...here's a pretty wretched surgery, the beloved Anal Gland Removal. This little dude has...well, had a tumor about the size of pea in one gland. However, when we got into surgery, there was more tumor-like material outside the gland. We're hoping he's cancer free, he's only 5.

So...onto the lovelies. :) (There's a total of 14 pictures, so if you get to read this before I'm done...you may end up in the middle of the pictures.)

Of course, it has to be shaved.

Then, a paste is injected into each gland and it hardens inside to make the gland easier to remove.

(This picture...the doctor's hands are the little kiddie one's, and I have the really long fingers and big hands.)

She decided to go for the tumor free gland first.

The purple mass type thing is the actual anal gland.

You have to alienate it, as there's a nerve that runs right there...if you get the nerve, you lose bowel control.

Then, you tie suture to the end that leads to the actual rectum before you cut it out. The other end is just connected to muscle.

And, here she is! It took about 30 or so minutes to get this one out.

Then, she moved onto the other side, the tumor side. This picture shows the tumor-like material behind the actual anal gland.

And...then, cutting it out.

Wanted to give an update...

Turns out the tumor inside the gland was indeed Cancerous. Poor little dude is only five. :( He's getting Radiation and Chemo, one of them three times a week. They'll also be doing further diagnostics to make sure the Cancer hasn't spread to other areas. :(

Thanks, Furry. He's a young dude with a lot of pep, so we're all hoping he does well.

Aww that poor baby! I hope he comes thru the treatments :(

I have to ask...how in the world do you snap pics and assist surgery at the same time? LOL

...generally the technician just listens to the heart, lungs...baisically I 'monitor' my paitient and every aspect of my paitient. Pulses, oxygenation, mucus membranes, femoral pulses, etc....the doctor does everything else. :)

Right! With humans, you have to get their permission and stuff...with animals, you just hide their face and no one knows who the heck it is. :)
