I have had Dexter for 6 months now. Right after I got him he started his mating dance.....6 months later.....he is still doing! Everytime I get him out within 5 minutes he starts in. I am really getting tired of this :(
Isn't this a bit long for the raging hormones? He will be 10 in Sept. Any suggestions?????

that this is all it was. I saw the title and thought something had happened to Dexter. I'm sure it must be frustrating for you --- but at least you still have him. Just be paitent with him .......I have no idea when this behavior will end so sorry can't help you there.

OMG.....I'm sorry I scared you like that....I didn't mean to sound like that. I am really puzzled though...I think he should have been over that a few months ago! Guess I better do some reading up on the subject.

Just tell him you have a headache and give him a humpy hut! ;) I'm starting to get confused, are we talking about a bird or real life? Oops, Dexter is 10, must be a bird!!

ROFLMBO.... just give him the remote control.. it'll solve all your problems.. and next time he asks for a beer, show him the fridge..males!
Just tell him you have a headache and give him a humpy hut!
LOL. Too bad Oliver got so obsessed with his hut I had to take it away! Now he rubs on his rope perch 1-3 times a day..
I don't think this behavior ever really ends. Oliver is "in the mood" a LOT, he feeds stuff in his cage (and my hands..) and dances all the time! I think it's something you just have to live with. Try to avoid giving him something soft (like a hut or bed) all the time (can put it in at night if he likes to sleep on it) and when you pet him dont pet him on the lower back area, that can sometimes stimulate the behavior. When he starts maybe you can distract him with a toy or something? Sorry I'm not much help!

Thanks for the suggestions Kaye....he does not have a hut or anything in his cage very soft. I have never seen him getting "friskie" with anything in his cage. What gets me is I don't do anything...he starts in the minute I pick him up. Hmmm....they are rather smart birds....you reckon a good talking to would fix that??? lol Seriously I have been using the distraction method and it works pretty good but the minute I quit he goes into that mode again....I guess I will just learn to work around that but I sure never knew this was a "problem" for some birds.

I was just thinking, Bailey 'loves' his happy hut but doesn't 'love' me. This may be way out there but it might be worth a try to put one in there. Maybe he'll find that more to his liking and then you will be able to hold him without him loving you. Just a thought.

You know....you may have something there Sherry! I think I will put something in there tomorrow just to see what happens. I made my 3rd. attempt today to get him to take a regular bath instead of misting with the spray bottle. I got him in there with a lot of talking...laughing....singing as cheerfully as possible but the minute he realized where he was he let a scream like a woman (I don't know where that came from but he was doing that when I got him. First time he did it I about had a heart attack!!!) He gets ahold of the faucett spout with his beak....hikes 1 leg up on one side of the faucett and his other leg on the other side!!!!!! There he was hanging upside down and very frantilly looking at me with those eyes like....."You can't possibly leave me like this!" Sooooo....so much for bath # 3......lol

krazy - Angel hated baths also - but now tolerates them. I fill the bathtub up to about 4 or 5 inches and bring her in and hold above the water while talking to her calmly. Then I lower her down and now she has gotten so she will step off into the water and start walking around and trying to avoid the water I am pouring over her back with a papercup. It took a while but now she understands that I am not trying to drown her and will even let me hold her on her back in my hand and kind of swish her around in the water. (Making sure her head stays well above the water) This way the under part of her wings get good and wet. So, just keep on trying with the baths and when you bring Dexter in -- just keep that beek away from anything he can cling to. Good Luck.

So funny. You see you are his flock. He is just mating you. He thinks you are his girlfriend. My bird does this all the time. I call Sunni a girl, but asuming the way she does things, she's a he.LOL. Everytime I ask her for a shake she will hand me her foot and procede to puke on me and dance and all that stuff they do. LOL. Its really funny to me,I laugh everytime she does this. I am not laughing at you, because it can be so sickning, to some. I am just so use to this thing she does.Knowing I laugh everytime she does it more. Brat. Sorry I can't be of help to you. But thank God he is okay I also thought something was wrong with dextor. I am glad he is okay!!!

Hi there..... sorry about missing your post...I just now saw it. Dexter is still being his happy little camper in love with his momma...lol... I bought him a bird buddy hoping to deflect some of his moods to it. I bought one grey..his color even. For a week he would stare at it..then run real hard across the cage and bite it and run off. I thought...good...he thinks he has a rival here. Well...as soon as he found out it was not alive and could not harm him he was... through....done..... finished...never touched it again... :( Sooo...guess I need to adopt your attitude and laugh...it is far better than crying :D

Krazy - I got a chuckle out of Dexter's birdy buddy story. Is the buddy still in the cage or did you take it out?

Krazy,
I was just reviewing this thread and I wondered what the birdy buddy is made of --------- is it a stuffed animal or a hard plastic? I am thinking of those hard plastic ones they have for parakeets. Have always thought of giving our birds a stuffed animal - but wasn't sure about it.

It is made of a really soft plush material....like those throws are made of that is so soft. It is hard to explain....it ties on the bars on a perch so Dexter can sit right up against it...it is as tall as he is. I got Oliver one too and he is cuddling next to it at night. Dexter has decided his is not going to hurt him so I will see if he starts sitting by it. There are all different sizes and colors. I even have one for Harley...my canary...lol I got Oliver a little stuffed rabbit that is made of that loop type material and he is just now starting to pick at it. I am hoping it will occupy some of the time that he is using to pluck.........

.... went to pharmacy to pick up blood pressure pres. and they had a clearance sale on beany babies. I got a colorful rooster with a puffy tail that looked just right for plucking. Then a second more brightly colored all plush rooster onto which I am planning to attach the white feathers I got from walmart for Angel to pick at. Thanks for the idea Krazy!

Sounds like they are really cute but I would be carefull about whatever is inside of the beany babies.Do you know.... because I don't and I was afraid it might be harmfull if he tore one open. But then again I see little kids have them all the time so it must not be toxic. I will try to find out for you..

Hi Krazy,
I thought about that to and would appreciate if you found out let me know. It just feels like stuffing material to me -- it is definitely not beans. LOL

Oh you would feel it if it were the beans in it so I'm sure your alright there. I'm having a heck of a time spreading myself out for these birds...seems like sinse Louie has arrived Oliver and Dexter are acting like 2 yr olds and wanting moms time more than usual...Awwwwww but aren't they sweet...lol
