puppy only pees once a day!?!

Hello! We just got a new miniature wirehaired dachshund puppy 3 days ago (we have a 5 year old standard already.) She is 16 weeks old and she has only pooped outside (no mistakes in the house yet!) However, she has only peed TWICE since being here, both inside. Once yesterday, in her play crate, and once the day before, same place. My husband, mother and I have all been watching her like a hawk and know she is not peeing without us knowing. I can't find any information about a puppy only peeing once a day, I just want to make sure she is OK. We are afraid she may be holding it for whatever reason. Any suggestions/advice/websites? ...does she have trouble peeing? Like...is she straining? Is her pee a normal color? Is she drinking a lot of water? If she' not drinking much...she won't be peeing much.

like tiffers said. if she isnt getting a lot of water..then she wont pee much. but make sure to keep an eye on her and if it goes on for too long i would take to a vet. she might have trouble peeing.. like a urinary infection.. and it might hurt so she is holding it in..but it might also be just because she isnt drinking enough. i just got a puppy and everytime she drinks she has to go pee afterwards. so i would ask a vet if you get to worried about it.

Got a black light? You can use that to see if the dog has been going inside.

The last dog I worked with that appeared to have that problem was actually sneaking behind furniture to go. This was because the owners who turned the dog into rescue punished the dog for accidents after the fact and confused the dog.

Our last rescued dog only went once a day for about a week. After she got used to us and the new house she got into a schedule of every 6 hours or so.

maybe she doesn't drink a lot of water. let her drink lots of water if the result is the same. bring her to the vet.

And if you only got her 3 days ago (from where?) She was probably dehydrated from wherever she came from. Many breeders and pet stores will purposefully not water dogs at specific times so they urinate less.

She might also be nervous and not drinking enough. Make sure she is not straining and that the urine is normal color, and give it time. She should start going more though, dogs should pee at least 3 times a day(especially puppies).

Take her outside to play a lot. She may be holding it in because she is not used to peeing indoors.

I understand why you’re concerned…peeing once a day isn’t normal. Your dog may be dehydrated and stressed out from the adjustment to her new home. If you haven’t done so already, this is definitely worth a call to the vet. Best of luck!

Hi everyone! Thanks so much for all your advice and sorry it took so long to get back. The pup is doing AMAZING! As many of you guessed, she was just completely dehydrated coming from the breeder (possibly not given water at all that day,) and I think not drinking enough the first few days here due to complete exhaustion. However, after a couple days of adjustment she has been to the vet, is totally healthy and acting completely normal and her true adorable personality is coming out! And she is peeing much more often now, like she should be!
