try looking for a bird rescuse shelter near you. Thats how I have gotten my last 2, my half moon chloie and my new cockiteil piper. They take a little work to get them use to you and comfortable but these guys need more help then others in stores. Everyone buys birds from petstores but no one wants a bird they have to work with. Plus if you arent looking to spend a lot on a bird most shelters adopt out of sell at a very minimal price.

I have only found one rescue and in the end you don't really own the bird even after a life time the rescue still does. I really do want to adopt though

I think if you look in birdtalk they may be able to help you. Also try finding sites that have more classifieds for birds so that your want for a bird gets out. Maybe you will find a good bird or breeder this way.

its the same as adopting a real baby. Its never really your kid but who does the baby call mom, not the state or the real mother....its the person who raises and care for him/her

I just don't feel right having some one who could take away a bird that I loved and cared for without even telling me why

I agree with you. That isn't fair. If you are going to care for your baby they shouldn't take it away from you. I understand the part of it going back to the shelter if you for some reason can't take care of it or don't want it anymore. But if they can just come in and take it then you shouldn't get a bird from there.

Around my area, people sometimes post articles they are selling or giving away on bulletin boards at the supermarkets, or at the humane society, or at the vets office. Maybe you can check if you have some listings like that in your area.

I rescued Marcel and he is mine forever. I haven't heard that rescues can come in and demand the bird for no apparent reason.

Marcel was from a small scale rescue (Bonnie runs it) here in Southern New Jersey, and as far as I know, Marcel is permanently here with me.

I don't think anyone would have the heart to take him away and place him in another home for the 5th time. He is so happy here.

Then again, Bonnie and I are friends. I don't know how other rescues and bird sanctuaries are.

well not all rescue can just the only one I can find :(
I will start looking at vets offices and see what I can come up with.

How old is Marcel again? I'm thinking he's around 3.5 yrs old but can't be sure if I'm getting mixed up with Sophie's age. Anyway, did the rescue tell you why Marcel has been to 4 other homes before you got him? I think it's so mean that people would get birds only to give them away. It seems like the other 4 people who got Marcel didn't really get to know him ... if he's only 3.5 yrs. old and he's already on his 5th home. Poor baby! :(

Anyway, I'm glad he's now with you because you are obviously a wonderful and caring person! :)

I am sure he is 3.5 years old as well. Sophie is 4. and Rio is 4 months??

I never knew Marcel was on his 5th home. For me I have never known a bird I didn't like and I would never give any of my birds up unless I couldn't take care of them anymore. And then I would a reliable home for them. I'm glad he found a great home with you.

First, we are Marcel's 4th home. Here is his history:

He was owned by two men from Queens, New York who were of French origin.
I was told they loved him very much but unfortunately they had to move back to France and couldn't take Marcel with them......

These men contacted Bonnie (Pionus Passion) who runs a small scale rescue here in southern New Jersey. She is a great person who cares very much for birds. She attempted to keep him but had to give him to another home because she had to devote a massive amount of time to her blue headed pionus and amazon who were both rescued from very very bad situations and she had to tame them.
And with this in mind, she had to give up Marcel who was tame and kind and she felt he needed someone who had the time to devote to him.

That's when he landed in his 3rd home. The owner was an employee in a petstore and he treated Marcel very very well, however, he also owned a hunting dog who constantly terrorized Marcel and would carry the bird around in his mouth. NO HARM came to Marcel, but Bonnie realized he needed a better home with no other animals like hunting dogs.

I came to know Bonnie from our local pet store. SHe knew we were bird lovers and wanted a larger parrot to take care of....hence, she had Marcel move in with us and he is such a delight and loves us very very much. He fits right in with our flock.

Even though he was treated well at the 3 previous homes, it was still traumatizing for him to switch homes in such a short period of time....he's only 3.5 yrs. old.

I believe things always work out for the best. Now he's permanently where he belongs.....with a loving family and flock.

Sorry for the long story....just wanted you to know his history.

(know what? I have such a soft spot for him knowing his prior situation.....I love him so much!!!)

I'm glad the hunting dog didn't hurt Marcel ... although I'm sure Marcel didn't enjoyed being in that dog's mouth. Poor baby!

I'm glad that your friend Bonnie was so caring that he found a better home for Marcel. Maybe he was meant to be with you after all ... sometimes things do work out for the better. :)
