I am looking for some advice on how to handle my pregnant cat. I have been reading on-line about providing a warm , quiet place for her to give birth. The problem is that I have three young boys at home that are very loud. I also have two neutered male kittens that are from her litter last year. (she will be spayed after this litter) The problem is she hisses and is not very friendly towards her other now full grown kittens. The only place I can figure for her to give birth is in the basement which is away from the kids but the other cats have access to since the litter box is there. Any suggestions? What are the chances that the other male cats, who are unbelieveably gentle, cause harm to the kittens or disturb the mom while giving birth?

anna, is it possible to maybe put a bed for her in the farthest corner in a closet in your bedroom, and explain to the boys that they are not to go in there and need to be quiet when they are in your room. since it would be more closed in than putting something in the basement, she may feel more secure--like she has her own den.

Great idea horsefeather... maybe try putting a large box with a top on it in a closet so she feels a little secure and hidden. I would be careful of any cat getting near her and the babies, moms get very mean when protecting them and it may stress her out with other cats around when giving birth.. she should be secluded somewhere for her safety and the babies. Good luck and let us know how many babies she has :). I'm so glad to hear she'll be spayed after this litter ;).

You could also put a baby gate in the doorway so the boys won't go in to take a peek and maybe scare her. If you do this, raise it up a little so she can crawl under instead of having to jump over.

Thank you everyone for your suggestions- the closet in the master bedroom would be a great spot for her. I will be using a baby gate on the closet as suggested to keep the kids away. Great idea!

My cat, Loosey, lives with her now-adult son and they, too, have problems getting along. I know that male cats and kittens sometimes dont mix well and bad things can happen, ecspecially to newborns, but I've never had a problem with this. Even with cats who havn't had time to be aquainted with each other. When we got Princess Squishy, she was pregnant. She had her babies while I was at my mothers house, right in the middle of my living room floor. My 4 yr old played with them constantly and they remained very happy and healthy. Looking back on it, the baby gate idea would have been a big help. It also help that your boys are fixed, they will have a lesser chance of hurting the babies because they wont be trying to get the mom into "season" again (which is a common reason toms kill litters of young kittens). But, getting back to what I was going to say, maybe your mom doesnt get along with her boys because she still wants to be dominate and feels that they, being boys, will take that from her. As long as everyone has their own space, they should work it out amonst themselves. Great idea to get her fixed as well, no more "accidents" that way and less wonderful pets to end up alone, unwanted or needlessly put tp sleep. Good luck with your babies, enjoy them while you have them.

Yes kittens are cute and fun but how many are out there with no home because people don't fix their pets. We can love our pets and be responsable at the same time

 If you like kittens, go to the shelter and save a few from certain death. Our local humane society euthanizes THOUSANDS of kittens and cats each year. I have recently adopted a stray kitten who is swollen with kittens herself. I picked her up in the parking lot at work on a busy highway. My own cats are kept indoors and all are spayed and extremely well cared for. I am deeply saddened by the condition that this little kitty is in. It's SO important to spay/neuter your pets. It's the responsible thing to do.

what are you thinking pet 95. there are too many homeless cats and kittens. just because they are cute you shouldn't keep having your cat get pregnant. alot of people only think they are cute when they are kittens. it is people like you that cause all these cats and kittens to be euthanized. in my city alone there are over 2,000 homeless KITTENS. and most will be euthanized. it is not fair for the cat or kittens. would you like to be born in a world, where possibly 5 months later it will be ended? be a responsible owner and spay your cat.

i am still pissed off. what are you thinking pet95. oh, kittens are cute so lets make a bunch of them to run loose and be killed in some form. don't you know that around the world cats and kittens are killed everyday, thousands and thousands. so, lets have a cat get pregnant and then who cares if they are killed or die. it isn't healthy for your cat to keep getting pregnant. well, i have two dogs and when it was that age they could be fixed they were. there are homeless animals all over the world. use common sense and read humane societies kill rates. get it fixed.

:D I am so happy now that I know Sylvia is well. I can now let her socialize with my other cats. I found Sylvia two days ago in a parking lot and Dr. Kim says "Don't be surprised if she has her kittens over the weekend." YIKES! I am new to this too Anna and I am sooooo nervous.
