I bought PURINA ONE dry food for kittens (because the first ingredient was actual chicken unlike most other brands and whiskas pouches because it was the only pouch i could find that said for kittens as well as cats...i cannot afford the science diet that id love to buy for her at this point.... WELL on the whiskas pouch which i dont give her that much of anyways I noticed it says to feed THREE pouches THREE times a day! Is this for multiple kittens? That sounds CRAZY since my kitten barely had a half an ounce of the milk replacement mixed with dry food. Today is her first full day off the milk and she seems fine and is eating her dry food just fine. Should i still add a little water to soften the food up or not worry about it if she is eating it alright? She is 5 weeks old is it alright nutritionally speaking for her to be off the artificial kitten milk...(the reason she was on it was because her mom died and she almost starved to death before someone rescued her and 3 other kittens) I never had such a small animal family member before so any tips would be GREAT!

You can basically feed them until they stop eating. However, one can is probably enough for three kittens. If you only have the one...feed 1/2 can three times a day. I never pay attention to feeding instructions, they're always crazy. Also, Science Diet Kitten Food is incredibly rich and usually gives everyone and their brother diarrhea. I don't advise feeding Science Diet Kitten, wet or dry.

That happened to both our kittens with the SD Kitten wet food. Interesting label on that one--the first 3 ingredients were "water, liver, pork by-products". Pork by-products?

Try not to feed so many different foods, it'll definitely cause diarrhea. :) Stick to one for now, and as they progress you can move them up the ladder until you find a food you like.

This is so interesting and I've never heard it before. I'm especially interested because I had a few cans of SD kitten food leftover and I gave it to the general population of cats (all just under or just over 1 year) to get rid of it. They eat adult SD canned every morning so I didn't think it would make a difference. Dumb me! Now, for the past two days, I've noticed diarrhea all over the house. I've been trying to find out which cat it is just in case there is something more serious going on, but this might explain it. I never thought about it since Science Diet is the only food my vet recommends feeding kittens and cats. They also give out free bags of it to every kitten you bring in. My latest kittens won't eat it because the kibbles are too big and they don't like wet food, but my other cats love the dry. I'm definitely going to investigate this more.
I recently found that Meow Mix now makes a kitten food too. I have been buying Purina Kitten Chow, but I bought a bag of the Meow Mix too. Sasha's little ones love it!

We're a Science Diet clinic, and so that's what all the clinic animals and boarders get fed. Usually the kittens end up with diarrhea, so we generally feed them the adult cat food or Canned A/D with supplmentation.

Yes, so is my clinic and when I worked there, that is all we fed too. I think I'm just going to donate the cans I have left and keep an eye on my cats till the diarrhea clears up. Thank you for this post!

Hi Icy :)
I was lucky enough to have switched the majority of my pets over to Eaglepack before the first big petfood recall, and although it's more expensive, it will definitely save me in worries and Vet bills over the long run (which is a always a plus :) )
(I couldn't put my oldest cat, Fox, onto Eaglepack, as he had that Urinary Tract infection when he was 3 years old and nearly died! I blame myself for not knowing more about High Quality petfood back then--I'm sure he wouldn't have gotten this if I'd been better informed and fed him the good stuff! So since the age of 3, he's had to be on a high costing prescribed Vet food, to prevent his Tract from blocking again )
The largest kitten/cat food bag of Eaglepack is the best value (over the medium and small bags), and they also have online discount coupons too.
(plus the email address and phone number of their nutritionist is available too )
I feed my Gilly kitten and Dana cat the Holistic Select Chicken Meal & Rice:

(It's made in Mishawaka, Indiana, USA---coincidentally, where one of my longtime online pals lives, so I knew that was a Good sign :) )

Sometimes I also add a bit of warm water to the kibble right before I feed it to my kitties, but not all the time, they'll eat it no matter what, they Love it!
(I add the water to try to slow them down from eating like little hoovers--LOL!)
Also, I switched kitty litters to Swheat Scoop as it's safe for Cats and Kittens , and helps with my allergies. (Plus no more worries about my kitties getting internal blockages from those nasty clay litters!)
You can check out the Swheat Scoop info here:

Good Luck & Congratulations to You with your new little kitten, I'm sure she'll bring you Great Joy and Love.
(What's her name by the way?? )
