OK, so I've been trying to break Cookie of chasing the chickens. She doesn't seem to be trying to catch them, just make them run and squawk. So, I'm sitting here with the doors open, cause it's sooooo beautiful outside. The birds of course, think that means they can just waltz on in. I holler at them to get out of the house, and Cookie looks up and spinning her wheels eventually manages to chase the chicken out into the yard. Shortly thereafter Cash comes running back in the house with his tail tucked like his butts on fire! With the Rooster in hot pursuit! Now, tell me, is it fair to make Cookie stop chasing them, when they're chasing Cash? LOL

LOL That's really cute! I don't know much about chickens, but if they aren't traumatized by it and as long as it doesn't get out of hand.. If they can do it, why not?! Hehe. That reminds me..

We stopped in Michigan to see Kevin's parents on our trip and they raise ducks. They have 2 ponds in their backyard and the ducks run free. April, my avid bird chaser.. is used to the birds on the beach that she can chase away. She saw the ducks they have and ran at them. When she found herself in the middle of the flock she had a complete dumbfounded look on her face when they didn't fly away like "Now what?!??" It was the funniest thing I've ever seen. :D

Kinda takes all the fun out of it when they don't run.

After Cash came running in with the rooster after him, I figured Cookie would chase him off, too. But, NOOOOO, she just sat there watching until the rooster went strutting back outside! Guess when the bird is taller than her, she's not quite so brave. LOL

LOL or else wanting to torment Cash. Maybe she and the rooster had a run-in at one time and she learned her lesson :p

Maybe, he's a very aggressive bird. Has tried to chase me out of the coop a time or two. The other day he came up behind me and slammed into my ankle, nearly knocked me down. I have to admit to some animal cruelty, I kicked the son-of-a-gun before he could attack me again. If I had a kitchen right now, he'd be in a soup pot already.

Roosters scare me.. There's very very few animals I'm afraid of, but bears and some birds put me on edge. I can't say I blame you!

Though it does sound cute and funny, a dog allowed to chase chickens will someday kill one. That is one of the hardest things to break, if it is even possible at all.

If I was you, I'd put a stop to it.

Well, I am trying, but yelling at her isn't working. I don't want to have to beat it out of her, but that seems to be the only thing she listens to. If I'm out there, she doesn't chase em. Only if I'm not close by.

ooo roosters...so one time a few years back (when my dad worked at a car shop next to a poultry place) my dad's friend let one of the roosters from the poultry place loose along with a bag of eggs so my dad can bring them home (wasn't the first time my dad got free birds from there). Point is....my dad brings this rooster home obviously with the intention of eating it. But, of course, you have to kill it first. But in our tiny apartment back then there was no place he could do it how it was done back in the Dominican Republic...so he had to try plan B which was to slit the rooster's throat and put it in the pot to just die (i was sooo horrified). When we came back to look the rooster was still alive  poor thing. anyway my dad took the bird in the tub and finished him off. They had some delicious rooster that night....i wanted nothing to do with it.

Oh my! What is it with chickens!!!???
Yesterday, Chico would not stop barking. He was going nuts. When I went to see what in the world had him so worked up, I found him with his nose against the fence. I got down, low to look through to see what was making him bark...a chicken!

Way too many of my neighbors have chickens. Here is what I figure is a good rule about whether chickens should be allowed in a neighborhood... if you can hear your neighbor flushing his toilet while you are standing at your kitchen sink, you live too close together for chicken farming! :)

I'd say that's a pretty good rule!

Well, here in Texas the law says you have to have at least 150 yards between a coop and any house. There is so much ammonia in their droppings that they poison the air inside the coop. Mine has a front that's entirely open wire, so it's very ventilated. And the birds have a fenced in yard that is nearly half the back yard, tho the fence is only 4 feet tall and several of the birds can fly over it. (Guess I clipped their wings too early, the feathers have already grown back. Gotta wait till next year now to clip em again)

Back when I lived in the country I got a pair of baby geese, and when they grew up they did an excellent job of teaching the dogs (and everyone else)to show respect for poultry!

I've got a pair of ducks in with the chickens, but they are more afraid of the dogs than the chickens are. Not sure I want geese, they are usually pretty loud aren't they?

Loud AND aggressive! I don't remember why Carolyn fell in love with those 2, (probably cause she knew they'd annoy me, she was 14) but I sure was glad when the school bus driver wanted them to keep the snakes down around her pond. Even the goats were afraid of them! Huh, I wonder if they would help the racoon problem, they're pretty territorial.

They might, but then the coons haven't been around lately.
