I was at home depot with my mom yesterday and I found some galvanized wire that was 1/2 inches by 1/2 inches it was a 3' by 5' roll and it was only $4.68 so I'm thinking of making a really big cage for my Love bird I learned how at the zoo last year and it's really fun.

Hi Birdgirl,

Can you make me a cage too? You can start your own business! It's too bad we live so far away from each other. I would love to get into making cages! That sounds funny. -I would make cages and get into them, LOL!

I guess another option for me would be to go to the Philly zoo and see about their cage making.

Hey, this could be a new job for bird loving people. It's a thought.

I would hav to know how big you want your cage to be and I don't think my dad would like me just giving away cages (I hate to say that I would if I could)if I made small cages I think that $10 or $15 + S&H would be a good price. I guess I could start selling cages instead of toys (I no longer have the wood for the toys).
I think you should start volunteering at your zoo it's very fun

Hi Birdgirl,

You should charge more than what you mentioned for your cages!

I would like a fairly large cage too (like you had mentioned) for my little stinky lovebird, LOL. I know lovebird cages start at $30.00.

I look forward to seeing how you design yours. How about curving the bottom of the cage so seeds can't drop out so easily? By the time I'm done giving you all the desired specifications, you'll have to charge $1,000 for one of them! :)

LOL I think $1,000 would be just a bit to much. well the only cage I can build is very, very simple it doesn't have a pull out tray it just has a place where you can put in and take out news paper as you can tell they are not the best cages in the world just what the zoo makes when they run out of other cages. I think $30 would be to much for one.
if you have a cage you don't need any more your zoo can always use them so can many rescues

wow thanks I think I should start a cage business on line the parrot cages in the stores are way to much (well thats what I think) and I just like to make things LOL when I'm happy I build when I'm sad I build when I'm tired I build and so on. I will hopefully I will get the wire I need soon I hope I still have wire clippers.

Oh Birdgirl....I'd love to have a medium sized one to use as a "sick" cage.

Let us know if you can make them to sell.

You know? I never thought of a sick cage? I will need 3 of them.

Mrs.Birdy

I would need just one sick cage.

You see, when one of my budgies is not feeling well, or needs a "time out" I transfer him to a separate cage. After he returns to the main budgie cage with the others, I sanitize the "sick" cage and it's ready for when needed again.

I have a very small cage I use now as a sick cage....but I would like a medium size one.

When more than one bird is housed together, it is important to have a separate "sick" cage, just in case you need to monitor one of them.

wow if I start selling cages I might get enough to get my grey I will talk to my dad about it

birdygirl
06-13-2003, 05:54 PM
How much are you selling them for??

birdgirl
06-13-2003, 09:33 PM
I guess they would be about $25-$30

birdygirl
06-13-2003, 09:35 PM
How big?? I think that is a great price but I would need one bigger than a lovebird sized cage. It might make a great travekl cage for Sophie

birdgirl
06-13-2003, 10:40 PM
well I haven't started making them yet but I think they would be about 15x15x20 or so and the bar spacing would be 1/2(only size they have) but I guess I could make them bigger if thats what people need. I still have to talk my dad into it so if you E-mail me if you really want to order a cage my dad will give in.

Pleae reconsider the use of galvanized metal in the cage. the galvanizing process leaves zinc on the metal and could cause toxicity problems. It would probably be fine for short term stays If you paint the metal you would probably be ok. Rustoleum is what i have seen recommended in other places. It needs to dry and air out completely, there should be no residual 'new paint' smell when you put the birdies in.
Good luck on your project. i have been considering trying to get me on to help me build a larger flight cage for my 'tiels. (HE JUST LOVES THOSE TYPE OF projects. SORRY FOR THE QUALITYOF THE TYPING BUT MY sEVERE IS INSISTING ON HELPING ME HERE

I'd love to get a cage like that to fill with budgies. Mine (4) definitely need more room than what they have now...they are so active.

My lovebirds are crazy and active! they do go bed early! they wake up at dawn and go bed at dusk! but in between that time its play time!! they shred anything and everything that they can get hold of!!

Amanda

Same with my luvie ... that's why I have to keep a very close eye on her when she's out of her cage. She will tear everything to shred if I don't watch her. She has started to tear my blinds up, some of the bills I've left on top of the table, books, etc.... she certainly knows how to keep me busy! :D

My tiel and pionus love to shred paper when there is some in their reach. It's funny to see because their beaks act like little whole punchers.

Amanda

Bijou shreds the paper into long strips then tuck them under her tail feathers. She looks so funny! She ends up looking like she's got a very long tail. Apparently, this is what female lovebirds do ... they use this technique to bring nesting material back to build their nest. It's certainly very cute and unique! :D
