Recently a one year cat of mine died in my arms, his breathing stopped and I gave mouth to mouth to my friend, he revived once as to say good bye and then died in my arms. His limbless body I will never forget as I screamed to god and the heavens to help me and my cat.
But alas it was a unrainy infection that blocked my friend's normal fuction of peeing.
But it was kind of my fault because I never noticed that he wasn't able to unirate and when I noticed his breath smelled, I had no idea what that meant.
To anyone and everyone that has a pet cat, if you notice an odre on thier breath or they start to walk funny get them to a vet AS SOON AS POSSIBLE

I'm so sorry that you went through this. You are so right, bad breath in animals and humans may be a sign of so many different problems.

I'm sorry for your loss. I'm surprised that you gave CPR. Most owners wouldn't put their mouth on their pet's.
Just some more information for you, by the time their breath smells it's generally too late. Obivously not if it's a dental problem, but kidney failure makes their breath/skin/hair everything stink. About 3/4 of the kidneys will be dead by the time the body starts to smell. So, it's not just that they can't pee when their breath smells. There are a few other things that are contributing to the illness.

Thx it did help me a bit to deal with this and I am sorry about my misspelling in my initial post but grief has an odd effect on one.
Like I didn't even think when I gave my friend / Armani mouth to mouth, it was a natural thing to do that I would do for any animal or person that stops breathing.
My real reason for posting this thread was to say;
Don't make the mistake I made, actually I now know that any behavior that is differant than your pet's normal behavior. Which means pay close attention to your pets at all times because they can't really tell you they are sick or in pain entill its too late.
So watch them and get them to a vet if something is odd or differant about them. You never can be too careful when it comes to living beings.
I do have one gripe tho when I called the vet and explained my cat could bearly walk and was breathing irratic, that the vet's assistant told me the soonest I could get my cat in would the next day almost 24 hrs later.
Never again will I ever accept that if my other cat Baxter is being odd.
I will DEMAND action and if the vet can't provide it I will ask for an Emergency location to take my cat to !
BTW Baxter and Armani were 2 months apart in age but played together and groomed each other, never ever a hiss or growl and now today I can see Baxter looking all over the house for his friend Armani. Its not just my loss or my wife's its also our Baxter's too.

most people get grossed out that i let my pets lick my face. my boyfriend refused to kiss me because our cat was licking my face and licked my bottom lip. thats sweet to give cpr to your pet.
our dog was depressed for a while when our cat mo died. no matter what people say, pets do feel pain and depression and miss their friends. im sorry you had to lose your friend. you did everything you could though.

Thank You, you understand and know a cat's love and affection, they just don't lick anyone ya know, maybe some day if your boyfriend is nice enought to your cat. It too will lick his face, but he will have to love it as you do.

To lighten the situation, I've had to give CPR to a few things at work...and by far, the most disgusting thing to do so with is a ferret! I nearly threw up and I don't get nauseous easily! It was a horrible after taste.

To the OP, I am sorry for your loss! You tried to save your buddy, way to go!

I'd put my mouth on my pets wayyy before I'd put my mouth on a humans mouth! HAHA, kinda funny perspective from what I do for a living huh? Precisely why they make masks and BVMs for CPR for us.
Tiffers, would CPR be relatively the same on a cat? What is their normal heart rate (about 140?) and the respiratory rate?

...honestly, not good with numbers here. But, it's relatively fast. Respiration as well. I guess I could grab my cat and find out, but she'd probably bite me.
CPR is about the same, of course, can't be as rough on a cat as a human or dog in fear of breaking something.

Of course, I'd treat it as if it were an infant. Less depth, faster rate. Please don't get Catillac bitin at you! LOL

I don't have to 'get' her to do it. It comes naturally for her. :)

Vix506, its a shot in the dark here but when a pet friend is in need you do whatever you can.
My wife read this thread and cried, even tho she was with me when all this happened (she drove us in her truck) , she didn't really know what was going thru my mind as it transpired.
Imagine her fate she had to keep both hands on the wheel and just glance now and then while driving, even tho she knew our cat was in grave danger.
And in all honesty she was peved at me because she couldn't hold our Armani when he passed on.

There is often anger with grief...sorry for your wife, she must have felt so helpless.

I too, am so sorry for your loss! One our our cats was just diagnosed with diabetes and we weren't sure, at first, if he was going to make it. Thankfully he did.
I have no problem with my dogs kissing my mouth. In fact Sadie has a game she plays. I tell her "kisses?" and she will start licking me all over the face until I tell her to stop. Yea, some of my friends think it is weird, but that's their problem:)

Thats sad, I'm sorry you lost him after all you did. Hunter has always kissed me and Jade, and Archie has picked up the habit too.

May I respectfully correct you Tiffany, his cat did not die of kidney failure, he had a urinary blockage, which as you and others may already know, becomes fatal very quickly in males. Of course some of the symptoms are trhe same, a male that connot pee is certainly going to fill up with poisons and smell simialr to a cat in acute kidney failure.
To Gregory, I am terribly sorry for your loss, and I would raise hell with your vet over the overbearing receptionist. It is not her job to judge an emergency.
It was good of you to post, to save others from this tragic thing.
My heartflet condolonces. May I suggest that you may want to get another kitten for Baxter. As he is only one year old, still a kitten himself, and is used to companionship.

No, I know that. He said something about the breath smelled, and I said the bad breath doesn't always mean urinary distress.

A normal heart rate for a cat is probably betwwen 100 and 140.
I only know this because my senior lady has high blood pressure and her BP and heart rate are checked fairly frequently.
