I am having a problem with my basset puppy Hannah, I had posted earlier about her having kennel cough, well needless to say she recovered from that 100% she is now a NAUGHY puppy! Anyway the problem now is she eats my other bassets (Billie) poop! She doesn't bother with Shilo or mollys they are mixed breeds. But as Billie is pooping Hannah is right under her butt, it gags me to think of it  and I am sorry if I am grossing people out but, should I maybe call the vet over this? Is there something I can do to stop her, I have tried spanking her, yelling no, everything I can think of. Any suggestions? She was dewormed when she got her shots and she is now 4 months old. I will post pictures when I can get them off my phone to the computer.

Thanks for any advice,

Lori

I think the vet or a pet store may have something that taste real yucky to dogs that you could put on the other dogs poop. Just a thought.

You can get something called Forbid either at a feed store or from the vet. You sprinkle it on the food of the other dog to make their poop taste nasty, or our vet suggested using Adolph's Meat Tenderizer, sprinkle it on the food of all the pets. Does the same thing.

In addition to the advice above, as soon as Hannah goes to Billie while Billie is trying to poop...move Hannah immediately every time or use a spray bottle of water along with a "no" each time Hannah approaches Billie as she is going. I like to use a tiny spray bottle that will "hide" in my hand, that way the dog associates the unwanted spray with the unwanted behavior and not the sight of the bottle. You have to be very consistent until she learns this.

My Cookie is bad about hunting all over the yard for the cat's 'places', and it doesn't matter how much we correct her, she still thinks it's a delicacy. I'm going with the meat tenderizer before she starts teaching Hamlet and Abby to try it.

While this is very disgusting to us humans, it is very common in the dog world. As you read in earlier replies there are some very good products out on the market to deal with this problem. Usually after a short time of using them you can stop and your dog probably won't return to eating it.

Should have mentioned, but Forbid is VERY expensive. That's why the vet suggested using meat tenderizer instead.

I am going to try the meat tenderizer trick, I have to do something if nothing else to save my stomach and nose, she sleeps with us and last night I was ready to vomit from her breath! Thanks for all the ideas and I am happy to know it not just MY DOG LOL! She is a little scavenger and takes anything that don't move, she loves nothing more than to run around with my daughters bra and my husbands pants. I will give it a try and maybe poor Billie can poop in peace. Billie is 13 years old and blind so she is not really to crazy about hyper little Hannah anyway.

Thanks again,

Lori

Sounds like my Cookie, she'll eat anything that doesn't eat her first! Especially if it's dead or decaying! I have to watch her like a hawk out in the yard. We call her our trash hound.

Pineapple works too, give them a piece or two after they eat and it will make the poop taste nasty.
