Well...for now anyway! She absolutely adores the new addition! She simply won't leave her alone! I was worried that Chipotle would be unnaccepting and what not, but Chipotle won't stop bathing and following 'Chamomile' around. I'm not sure if I want to keep her with that name, but she seems a lot sweeter than Chipotle. :)

I was worried about tossing Chamomile into the Lion's Den, so I just set the box with her in it into Chipotle's cage.

It was like a magnet for Chipotle. She bolted to it, and explored every piece of that box as best she could.

Then, I felt like Chipotle would be somewhat decent, so I let Chamomile out.

However, Chipotle was still more interested in the box.

Keep an eye on them both since you didn't bother to quarantine, and Petco's rat mills are notorious for harboring various nasty URIs.

Maybe that was Chipotle's problem all along, she was lonely? Guess I'll have to run upstairs now and introduce myself?

THANKS EVERYONE ELSE! They're sharing the little box together right now! :D

Would you stop arguing with me?!
I bought the rat to save it's life. The girl who handed it to me, even asked me what I was feeding it to. If all you're going to do is be a shat to me, get out my thread.

I never imagined rats could be so darn cute! :D When I hear rat, I think of the cat sized monsters down by the river or the one who almost ate my face while I was sunbathing a million years ago!
They are adorable Tiff

Good move getting Chipotle a friend. If you decide against Chamomile, how about Chicory?

I'll never forget when my ex got my daughter two "girl" mice and she ended up with baby mice! haha

I think Chicory is a spice, they used to make coffee from it during the Civil War when coffee got scarce. Chamomile is more of an herb, they make tea from it, to calm your nerves. Which, come to think of it, may be the best name for her, since she's helping to calm Chipotle, right?

That's why I picked Chamomile. :)

I don't know if chicory is considered a spice or an herb. But it does have sedative effects. It's leaves look a bit like dandelion, and the root, if you roast it, smells like coffee. My mom loves chicory in her coffee...makes it smooth tasting, gets rid of the bitter taste that some coffees have. It makes the coffee a darker color...that's what made me think of Chicory as a name, your little newbie is darker than Chipotle. ;)

...I really think that all Chipotle needed was some company. I know they're very social, and regardless of how much time I spent with her...I wasn't a rat. She's totally happy now...it's amazing. I didn't think getting a cagemate would work as quickly as it did.

No, I didn't do it to support them. I did it to save a rat from a sure horrible death. My four dollars isn't going to do anything to the rat mills.

Too cute! :-D
I'm not a big fan of having my own pet rats, but I DO think they are charming.
I have mice. Pet ones. The so called "feeder mice" they sell at petco, for 1.99. We've only got one right now, but we've got enough cage space for up to four - my husband is well aware of how hard it is for me to walk away from them.
I had one that earned the name tripod. She chewed her own foot off (no idea why, but I'm assuming she'd gotten an infection) less than two weeks after we brought her home. Cost us almost $100 in vet bills to get that little mouse better. LOL - the vet did smile when she asked where I got her as she handed me the first bill, and I muttered "paid two dollars for her at petco."

Personally, IMO, I'm glad you saved her from a certain death. I too agree that unfortunately, buying one rat from a HUGE company like Petco is going to do anything. There are TONS of people that don't know any better. So why not do all you can do to at least SAVE a life instead of just talking about not going there.

Lord, I can't even begin to tell you how many I've rescued. Good heaven's.
Rats, dogs, cats, puppies, kittens, birds, rabbits, mice, hamsters, fish...the list goes on and the numbers are huge.
But, you can rescue all you want...if you don't take care of them, then what's the point of rescuing?!

Really, I don't think anything but legislation outlawing the mills, and enforcement of it is going to stop them. There are lots of ways to save an animal from a miserable life and premature death, and no matter how it's done, giving an animal a better life is a good thing. What was it someone used to have on their posts? Something to the effect of "you will not change the world by adopting a dog, but for that dog the world will surely change"? I don't recall who had that (or who said it), but it about says it all.

I totally agree. Especially after the girl who handed me the rat said, "So, what are you feeding?!"

You should file a complaint with the corporate office at Petco, it's against their corporate policy to sell animals as feeders knowingly.

PetsMart doesn't sell feeders. Petco does. Why do you think all their mice and rats are albinos. They're feeder animals.

I worked at PetsMart...we refused the feeder service to many, many people. Some would get ticked and tell us that Petco would sell them to them. But, our GM told us that Petco's main income is from reptile/amphibian feeding. Most of their stock are albino, the cheapest of the cheap...soley for that purpose. It may not be that way now, and it may just be that some of the older employees still are in that habit...or some GM's of Petco can't do without that income.

Petco is allowed to sell feeder mice and rats. They have live and frozen. Snakes eat too... Even though I've always recommended pre-killed, some people still prefer live. It's sad, but that's the food chain.

10-04-2007, 03:02 AM
I'm curious...wouldn't it be a bit risky to feed a pet snake a live animal? I'd think you'd risk the rat/mouse scratching or biting your pet. (I can't believe I'm even thinking of this...I'm terrified of reptiles and amphibians)
Jennicat
10-04-2007, 08:44 AM
It is risky, bites and scratches are frequent, and sometimes serious injuries can happen. There's a picture floating around Exotic DVM of a snake that was basically scalped by a rat when the owner left them alone together for an hour.
I think most responsible herpers feed frozen and thawed, or prekilled to prevent this from happening to their snakes (assuming the snake will take it, of course). I think a lot of the people that just "like to feed live" like to watch an animal kill something and laugh.

It's true, and it's even more sad that they buy snakes just for this reason. Everyone likes to watch a snake eat unfortunately.

Two of my grandkids left a birthday party when the childs Dad fed his snake a live mouse. Whats scary is that not more of the children wanted to go home after that. I've never owned a snake, but I was under the impression that they would only eat live food. My middle daughter used to have one and quit stopping at the pet store for her mice when I was with her when she caught me trying to let them out of the box. Another case of a pet being sold without educating the owner about how to care for it?
Jennicat
10-04-2007, 04:46 PM
A lot of snakes can be taught to eat prekilled food... some can't. The majority of those that can't, in my experience, are the ones that have been wild caught (which is just poor practice, IMHO).

Agreed. ...they also have these little vibrating bowls that make the frozen animal look alive. But, wild snakes are smarter than that.

I really was ignorant, I just assumed all reptiles sold were bred in captivity. Sure would be nice if humans would leave the wild things wild, I won't even try to capture a feral cat unless it's in a dangerouse circumstance. Feed them or have them spayed, yes, but not remove them from where they are doing ok.
Jennicat
10-07-2007, 09:44 AM
Well, like so many bad things being done, it's all about the almighty $$$. Most types of reptiles in captivity breed quite well, but they can trap snakes, lizards, etc, en masse, and not have to worry about supporting the mothers and fathers until they produce.
