My puppy has this build up in his left ear. It looks like dirty ear wax and he's always scratching at it and it really bothers him when I touch it. I know I need to take him to the vet for it but it will be a while before I can so my question is are their any home remedies or anything I can do to help him until I can take him in? I looked it up online and read it could be ear mites

You can clean it out with a cotton ball and some ear cleaner, but if it is an infection it needs to be taken care of immediately. The scratching at it sounds like it is an infection. It's not something that should be waited on, as it can get worse.
Good luck.

yeah usually dogs dont have really bad ear wax unless its something like ear mites or, like newfiegirl said, an infection. just like in people. the vet can take a skin scraping and toss it under a microscope to see what it is. sounds like shes got something you just dont know what. you can use a regular q-tip just like with people. just make sure not to try and go too far, you dont want to damage anything. while youre at it, you might as well have the vet look her over for mites/fleas anywhere else. if theyre in her ear then they could be anywhere.

This could be a number of things from infection to ear mites, I would get to the vet so that they can determine what is up and prescribe the proper meds. There are not really home remedies for ear mites...when I worked at our local vet clinic as a tech a lady came in saying she had dumped ALCOHOL down the dogs ears for this very thing and this ended up ulcerating her dog's ear drums! Better to let the vet do this than try to do it at home!

When I rescued my puppy Paco and his sister Lola at 8 weeks old, they both had terrible ear infections due to the incompetence/ignorance of the neighbours that had them.(they left them outside in the pouring rain with no shelter, no food, no water, nothing! And they hadn't had any of their distemper shots or anything either! )

I got all of their shots done and some ear drops from the Vet immediately (Tresaderm) and it still took a while to clear their ears up. (There was also another liquid--possibly just warm water and a soft cloth---that I had to use to wipe out the gunk from the ears continuously too (being extra careful not to push any back into the ear)

You definitely need to get to the Vet ASAP!
(If it's a financial thing, you can check into a payment plan with your Vet, or a possible interest-free loan. Some Vets also give big discounts to low income pet-owners--something which I'm checking out myself so that I can get my newest kitten spayed. It's part of the NOKA--No Kill Association here :) )

Wishing your puppy a speedy recovery :)

Its better if you let the vet take a look at it because you dont know what it is. Touching it might end up in infecting your dog's ears.

Start saving up now--pets are expensive.

Currently my Rott has an ear infection that sounds like your dogs symptoms. Lots of really black, smelly, gooey ear wax. Scratching alot, shaking his head, holding his ears at awkward angles. He's got a yeast infection in his ears and we are currently on our third treatment with Ottomax, plus a steriod, which is supposed to help. Its been a long struggle, but he's finally getting better. And yes, it's been expensive, but ya gotta do what ya gotta do!

Loki's had chronic ear infections since I got him a little less than a year ago. My vet didn't tell me, and I had to figure it out on my own...but, it's because he has allergies. Once I brought it up with my vet he said "Yeah, it's probably allergies." He gave him a shot. It didn't help. He's made no attempt to discover the source of Loki's ear problems. I haven't taken him back since and I'm trying to find another vet.

I guess what I'm trying to say is when you take him in...try and make sure there aren't any underlying problems causing the ear infection. If you find and pinpoint a problem it's going to save you tons of money in the long run.

Clean the ear with mineral oil on a q-tip. The mineral is very gentle. You may need to have the hair cut out of his/her ear. I clean my poodle puppy's ears at least once a week. The mineral oil will not hurt the skin.

Clean the ear with mineral oil on a q-tip.
I don't advise doing this unless you plan on cleaning the ears afterwards with an actual ear cleaning solution. If you don't get all the mineral oil out of the ears, it'll sit in the canal and cause all sorts of problems. Also, it does nothing to clean...it's just softer on the ear when wiping the gunk out with a Q-Tip, especially if there's an infection.

The breeder I got Shiloh from cleans all her poodles' ears with mineral oil. Of course you need to wipe the oil from the ear too. And a little oil goes a long way.

My dog gets the same thing, we just cleaned it out with hot salty water, but when we got hi checked at the vets, he had a build up of 5 different bacterias, which is strange because I obsess over protecting my dogs from harm.

Yeast build ups a common problem aswell.

My advice get him to a vet as soon as possible.
