Hi All,

I have another cocker named Barrett and he is around 11 years old. My problem with him is that he gets sick a lot and vomits blood up once or twice a week. When he does this, he will not eat and wants to hide. When this is passing he then has a bowel movement that is diarriahea blood that is unbelievable. When he first started this about four years ago, I thought he was bleeding to death. Since that time he has been doing this like it is normal except for when he is going through the motions. He has been to the vet, but the vet can not find anything wrong. Of course by the time he see the vet he is normal. Barrett can not eat table food… Very time he does he starts this problem the day after. If that is not the problem, it must be the nervousness with the grand kids. Has anyone had this problem?

Can anyone help???

I have never heard of this but if I were you, I would find another vet. Have you taken the vomit and bloody diarreha to the vet with you? Maybe you can set something up where you can take him in as soon as this happens. If not, I would for sure find a new vet.

"TooCrazy is absolutley right..I echo every word of her post. Get a second opinion from another veterinary clinic, and please do this as soon as possible. Take care.

hi whitestar 505,
i have a little rat terrier mix and I found fresh blood in his feces on two occasions within the last 4 month. I brought him to the vet and they couldn,t find anything either. The vet said some dogs are so nervous that they hemorrhage. My dog got a nervepill for a couple of days to keep him calm until it cleared up ,which it did after a few days. But what is happening to Barret sounds pretty serious and he probably is in pain. That,s why he hides and doesn,t want to eat. I probably would get a second opinion too. Please keep us posted.

I will redundantly second..or thrid, fourth, fifth, hundredth...what has already been said about a second opinion. That is horrible, the poor guy!! My dog also has that hiding instinct after he pukes (although his puking is due to eating sticks and leaves) and I wish he could understand me when I tell him it's ok, he doesn't have to hide or be ashamed. That is very scary. I hope you guys get it figured out soon.

I second the above said. I think any decent vet should allow you to bring him right in away while he is going through this, I've never had a problem bringing any of mine in on a moments notice, and believe me, I've had to do it alot. And ask for a feces sample thing before this happens again, so you can take a sample with you and your pooch doesn't have to go through, them trying to get a sample from him, making things worse on him. Poor little guy. Good luck, Keep us posted.

All,

Barrett is suffering from a very nerviness aliment which is causing his bleeding. The are two thing causing this problem 1. Grandkids make him upset and 2. table food, not that we feed him table food but the grandkids dropping everything. So where do we go from here?

Well I'm glad to hear it's nothing major or life threatening!! How about locking him up in your bedroom when the grandkids come over and tell them the bedroom is off limits? Since Barret is nervous around them anyway, he may greatly appreciate being locked up away from them. And then after they leave you can vaccum or pick up any food laying around that he might get.

Im so sorry to hear this ... assuming your grandkids dont live with you on a full time basis, I agree that maybe you should put him in a quieter place, away from the grandkids when they visit. I have a Labx that almost died from eating people food, he would vomit but there was never blood. Some dogs have systems that cant handle it and it can have fatal effects on them. Best of luck to you and Barrett.

Squawksx3,

Grandkids do live with me. Well, with Sparkle gone now we have another dog that arrived on Saturday. Her name is Bailey and we got her from the Cocker Spaniel Adoption Center here in Maryland. She is 4/5 years old and a sweet little thing. The kids have someone now to play with and to leave Barrett alone. No we did not get her to replace Sparkle, she could not. Just another lost soul looking for a home. Bailey will be Bailey and will create her own reputation in the years to come.

I would think he has some kind of cancer of the blood, the things you said were a major sign he might. Go to the vet and ask them to check the blood. Sry to say that.

I would also change vets if I were you, and take a fresh sample in. The dog could have gastrointestinal problems which may be stress induced, or even more serious problems. When my dog had it a week after we moved to another house, she would not eat or drink, and got extremely dehydrated. Also, human food is not compatible with dogs and when your dog gets sick soon after eating human food, that may be a sign that that is what the problem is. Hope he gets better soon!
