My poor new baby Chica went to the vet today and was given pre-meds because she is so small and the vet wanted to be prepared for any reaction. She was given the Corona virus vaccine and also her Parvo combo virus vaccine. Well when we got home she began scratching her eyes and face nonstop and whining like crazy.

Her poor little nose was swollen and itchy. I ended up taking her back and they are now keeping for a little while for observation and to give more meds to counter the reaction.

She is only 8 weeks old and weighs 2.4 lbs. This is SO scary! I feel so horrible..as if it was my fault. Is anyone else familiar with these situations and if so.what can I expect when she goes back in 3 weeks for more shots??

I am waiting on the vet to call me so that I can pick her up...:(

Totally normal. Vaccine reactions happen all the time...you can pretty much expect about the same thing next time as well. Did the vet tell you to give her any benadryl after vaccinating?

We got her home tonight and she began to itch again and scratch constantly so I gave her less than half a teaspoon of liquid childrens benadryl and now she is sleeping in her crate. They gave her dexamethasone around 4:30 and that seemed to help control the itching until about 8:30. The benadryl wont hurt her will it? The vet said I could give it to her. she seems so unsettled..like she feels like she is falling..I am guessing from the way the meds make her feel.

The steriod (dex) will make her eat more, drink more, pee more. The benadryl will knock her out. She's got a whirl of feeling going on right now. :) No, you did nothing wrong and no it won't hurt her to give her the benadryl. They may ask you to give the benadryl before vaccinating next time as well.

Thanks for filling me in. I already feel bad enough about everything that has happened to her today. she was playing and just currently fell asleep behind me on the floor. She just could not stop rubbing her face and was crying so I gave her the benadryl in hopes to make her more comfortable. Looks like I did! lol! It scared me because she appeared to be twitching but was just jerking herself awake each time she would almost dose off..as if she was fighting the effects. I really hope tomorrow she doesnt itch anymore and feels better..I can tell by the way she is acting she must feel pretty lousy.

Steroids make some people's skin crawl, she may also be experiencing this. I'm sure she'll be okay, sorry about this though. :)

They are, a very well known vaccine to cause a reaction is Lepto. It's generally given with the Distemper combo. You're vet may advise you to know get this one.

Okay..I was wondering what happened because she did not show signs of a reaction until about an hour or so after her shots. Lepto probably caused it then.

Yeah, may have been. We don't give it to Dachshunds or Chihuahua's on their first visit. We wait until about the 3rd or 4th boost to include Lepto.

they told me when she is 16 weeks I will drop her off so they can observe her all day, her premeds will be boosted up and afterwards too..and I will also dose her with benadryl. I have another chihuahua and she never reacted to vaccines. she is so tiny..I guess I just feel guilty which I know is dumb but she is like my child. lol

Not dumb. My dog, cat, and rat are my children. :) The only one's I'll ever get and that's okay.

Some doxies do okay and some chiweewee's do okay...each and every dog is different, like people. :)
