What is a good flea/tick spray for the yard? I saw fleas on my dog yesterday and i picked and killed them (all i could see). Going to Wal-mart today to pick up some shampoo and spray for the house. May go to Petco this weekend to pick up some yard spray and more shampoo and house spray (heard Zodiac was real good so i'm going to walmart since Petco is an hour away and i'll get the good stuff this weekend). i wanted to know what was the best brand or if anybody has any suggestions. . . .?? I want to nip it in the bud before it gets real bad.
Thanks,
Amy

Most outside treatments, even diatomaceous earth, may harm good insects as well as fleas. A new product of nematodes, that you mix with water and spray on your yard, eat only flea larvae, so don't upset the normal flora of your yard. One name is BioFleaHalt from Farnam (800-234-2269). It is also available from Flea Busters.

Zodiac does make a good flea spray. If you do not have a big flea problem, I've found that just using your Advantage/Frontline/Revolution every month stops the life cycle (obviously because they die after jumping on your dog) so they can't reproduce anymore. Therefore, killing all the fleas. Of course, if you feel better about the sprays, go for it :)

Steer clear from Hartz and anything Hartz brand...

I agree that the Adv/front/rev monthly is the way to go.:)

I give her Frontline Plus every month. On the 6th it'll be 30 days which is when i'll give her more. Do you think the meds are just weaker since it's close to time for more? We only have a walmart close by so i bought a doggie flea shampoo. It was hartz. :( But she didn't seem to be sensitive to it. And hopefully i won't have to use it again. we're going this weekend to Petco and i'll get the good stuff. I just wanted to nip this in the bud before it got bad. I also washed her bed and our bed sheets. I didn't get to her other bed but i did look at it and didn't see anything. My husband wanted to wait on the house spray because he wants to try to get down to the source of the problem so it's not repeated. So far, no more fleas. The source could be anything. He did put a flea powder on the carpet where we picked the fleas off of her because one jumped before i could kill it. Do you think that's good enough since we haven't seen any more on her or on the floors anywhere?

I think it should be fine. Like I said, if it wasn't bad to begin with, you should have nothing to worry about.
The medicine does usually get weaker close to the end of the month. But usually it's never anything to worry about. If you feel it's a problem, it IS safe to use every 3 weeks, especially if you have a bad flea problem in your area.

...the fleas you visibly see...only make up a small percentage of the actual population. Take a look at this chart (http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a387/tiffydyann/fleachart.jpg)...
