Hi,
I have had lots of different pets, and recently my golden retriever died of cancer. I decided to try a pet I've always heard is clean, intelligent and affectionate...a rat. Well, now I have two females, Lily and Valentine, living together in a "rat condo". They know their names, they love to kiss and snuggle, and they are fun to have. I am really enjoying the happiness they've brought into our home. For many years, I had guinea pigs (my son is really allergic to them, so no more). They can be kept in a large cage or even trained to use a litterbox (so can rats, I hear). My pigs were always walking or running around the house on their little short legs and pink feet. If I ever wanted to find them, opening the refrigerator door always produced an instant chorus of squeaks and a heard of guinea pigs running into the kitchen. One of my pigs even slept on my pillow at night.
I've also had gerbils, hamsters and a canary. One of my friends swears by ferrets (they are cute and full of personality), and another has a bunny who has free run of the house and her own litter box. Last but not least, I once babysat my friend's two iguanas. He says they are more expensive to house, but it's pretty cool to watch tv with one iguana on your lap, the other on your shoulder. Those are just some personal experience opinions. Think about what kind of pet would fit into your lifestyle, the shelter and care it needs, etc. Also if you are living with family, what pet can they live with? Would they care for it if you were away? Good luck! I'd love to know what you decide.

animallvr, it depends on your personality. people who live in tight spaces, like apartments, and children tend to go for "pocket" pets. gerbils, hampsters, guinea pigs, rats, etc. ive heard great things about rats. id like to try one, but my cat Talia, is a hunter. nothing moving is safe, not even my legs!. Cats are great too. they are tons of fun, Talia hasnt stopped making me laugh since i got her, until recently. she has a bladder infection and i feel so bad for her.
Fish can be great too! ive had several fish (pre-talia) and they were wonderful. they even lived a long time. one lasted for 12 YEARS!!!!
just remember that any pet you pick, make sure you are compatible with its personality. otherwise you could have big troubles

You could always get a reptile. :D Don't leave those little critters out (that is, if you are even into them)...

Hi, All I can say is that rats are great! As far as finding them, of course the obvious option is a petstore but many times those rats aren't bred well and will develop tumors really easily. If possible find a breeder who cares about the genetics of their babies and their health.

Ask around at vet clinics that treat exotic animals, they should probably be able to help you. I found a rat breeder in Virginia that you can e-mail at : d_spice_of_life@mail.com If they're too far away perhaps they know of a breeder closer to you. Also many breeders breed hairless, tailess, Dumbo, and other types of rats, many of which are prone to health problems and have a shorter life span, so even if a particular breeder looks cool make sure it's also going to be healthy!

There are many pets you could get you could buy a reptile snake, frog, etc. or a bird,a small furry critter like a mouse, hamster,or rat.You could get a cat.You could get a rabbit, guinea pig,or a gerbil. You could even get a caterpillar for all i know.Whatever works for you. Please make sure that if you are going to buy a pet that you have time to care for it and love and give it attention no matter how much time it may require. Also if you do not know much about the animal you may want to consider getting go online and do some research about your new friend. Please remember one thing ANIMALS ARE A BIG RESPONSIBILITY!!!

Don't get a rat! I do love rats. I have 3 myself, but as they get older tons of help problems occur which leaves you with a heft vet bill and also ratties only live for 1 1/2 - 2 1/2 years. At 2 you start to become really attached to them. This is when they die so you are very very sad when they leave :( So I would not get a rat, unless you deal with death well. I would suggest a chinchilla :) They have few health problems, the live for 15 years, they have the softest fur, they are sweet and intelligent. I say go for a chin, rats are to hard to leave behind when their time comes.

If you do not want a rat or dog three good pets would be a rabbit, guinea pig or hamster. Rabbits can be trained to use litter box do not need to go outside arent as big as dogs and are more loveable than fish(this applys to all of them!!)Guinea pigs are a little noisy but they will follow you around if you are around them enough:)I love mine.Hamsters are much smaller and they only live for awhile but they are cute and fun. Good luck!!

If you can't get a dog.. I wanted my grandma to get a dog.. but she wouldn't. So I got a lop eared bunny.I thought it worked pretty well. I trained it to, so it is like a dog pretty much.. and he even has a dog chain so he can play around outdoors.

I have 15 rats (not by choice hehe) 9 of them are up for adoption ... But if you are going to get a rat you HAVE to get two. they need a buddy otherwise they will get depressed and you can only play with them for so long before you need to put them away. i wouldnt trade my rats for anything. I wouldn't suggest a pet store most of them tend to be sickly and un healthy.

Hi... you didn't mention why you couldn't get a dog... is it allergies, space.. or something else? I noticed that alot of people recommended that you get a pet rat.. It's true that they make great pets and are pretty easy to deal with. It is also true that they do not live a long time about 3 yrs. I've never had a chinchilla, so I don't know much about them, but they do need special dust to keep their fur clean. If allergies is your problem it may not be wise to get any furry pet. Personally, I'm a bird lover. Both Cockatiels and Parakeets (Budgies) make great first time bird pets. But even they are a bit of work. Its important to learn as much about a type of bird as you can before buying one on impulse. I guess that is true with any animal. It is not hard to learn to handle them especially if you get only one.. and it is still a baby. Some birds are actually a bit like dogs - they can learn tricks and become a great companion for their owner.

I highly reccomend hermit crabs. They're very low cost to take care of, odorless(if u clean the crabarium right), and very fun to watch. They need to have different size shells in the tank with them at all times though.
