Yesterday we took Rio for a ride and she acted so funny. I had her carrier strapped to the car seat so that she could look out the window and the back windows open a crack. Anyway, there was bit of wind from the back window going to the front of the car ... and after a while I noticed Rio opening up her wings and letting the air go under them. She also spent a lot of time squaking.
I think that with the wind under her wings and her being able to see the scenery outside the window, she thought she was flying. It was so funny to see.
Anyone else have this experience?
:p

Oh how cute!!!! I can just imagine how happy Rio was with the wind blowing and looking at all the scenery.
Whenever I take my birds in the car they are caged or in their carriers. I would like to try that with Marcel....I think he'd like it.

How neat! I'm sure she was enjoying every minute of it! :)

When I take Taz out with me, he also likes to do the same thing only without the windows open.

Sounds like Rio had fun.

Jsimko, our birds certainly know how to make us laugh, don't they? They do the "simplest" things and somehow it just makes my day to know they are having fun.

Are you able to keep your bird in the carrier the whole ride. Taz sometimes opens the door and comes up to sit on the front passenger seat and look out the window. Of coarse when I find a good place to stop, I put him back.

So far Rio has not tried to open her carrier door to get out. I'm not sure if she will eventually try (when she's older). She is only 4 months old so she's not very adventurous yet as to try and do things on her own. She's usually content just being near me.
Lately, I have noticed that if I walk away from her she tries to fly to me. Her wings are clipped so she can't fly well at all. When I just got her, she would just sit wherever I have her and if I walked away, she would squawk (but not try to fly to me).
Maybe as she gets older and gets more confident about what she can do, she may try ...

Sophie doesn't try to open it. She sits there and squawks to get out.

Monty just loves the hairdryer. When I am drying my hair I will often set it to cold and blow on him with it. He just loves it. He stretches his wings and lets the air blow over him, straining into it as though he is flying.
We normally carry him in a plastic cat carrier in the car but take him out over the quiter country routes. He sits on my shoulder while my husband is driving. Not the safest, I know, but I just hate to leave him in the carrier for the full 4 hour journey when we are travelling down the country to my family.

I have tried to keep my parakeet in a carrier on car trips, however she will not stop screeming unless she is sitting loose on the seat next to me or in my shirt pocket. If you are wondering if I walk around with bird poop in my pocket, the answer is no. Tweety is very well potty trained and never has an accident. She will go on command or in her cage. When we are out and she decides that she has to go, she taps my shoulder with her beak.

JSimko, I think it's great that you've got Tweety potty-trained. I thought about trying to potty-train Rio but just haven't been on the ball lately about timing when she has to go. I always end up missing it and by the time I remember, she's already done it.
Maybe it's also because I use a "flight suit" on Rio so I'm not so conscious about her little "droppings" on my shirt/furniture, etc...
I would like to potty-train Rio anyway, even if she has a flight suit ...

It is very easy, since your bird wants to please you. Tweety is such a great little bird.

Amanda, My senegal does the same thing. If I need to go to the other room for something she squaks like crazy. The loudest I have ever heard. I tell her now I will be right back, she seems to like that. But even if she sees me walking past the room to do something she will scream like crazy.

Our green cheek screams like mad if we use the paper shreader or the vacuum, if we do not warn him first.

JSimko, that's so funny that you have to warn your birds first or they get mad :D

Sophie hates the feather duster well any cleaning products. If you walk past her cage with a roll of paper towels she will scream!!! And a feather oh my!!! And pi's are supposed to be quiet. She will scream until it is put in the closet.
Amanda

Maybe Sophie thinks the feather duster is another bird?

I have no idea. In her opinion it is evil and will be screamed at until it leaves.

And the thing is she has to wait until it is in the closet with the door closed. If it isn't even in the same room as her and she sees just a little peice of it she will scream until she here's the closet door closed and there is no tricking her. She knows if we closed it to stop her screaming or if we closed it to put the feather duster away.
Crazy Bird!!!

J.SIMKO:
Do you think it's too late to train Marcel to poop on command....he's 3.5 yrs. old.

I don't know. None of my birds poop on command but it is never to late to teach a bird new tricks.

I keep meaning to potty-train Rio, but I'm not on the ball enough to get the timing right :(

I tried with Sophie but she likes to poop on things she shouldn't. So I can't get her to poop on command.

Birds are very eager to learn new things from us. It is never too late to teach them something new. Usually it is dogs that do not learn after a certain age. My birds are always learning new tricks and never slow down with the speed at which they learn. I am sure that you will not have any trouble with potty training them at any age.

Jsimko....I am so glad to hear that. I would love to teach my flock some new things. Marcel is more adept to learning than the others.
Regarding his poop habits......he mainly goes in his cage or on his play stand. I very rarely have to clean up the floor. He is also considerate of the people who like to let him ride on their shoulders.....except me. He loves to poop on me for some reason...maybe it's a sign of love...lol. I keep unscented baby wipes around for quick clean-ups.

Mrs.Birdy, how often does Marcel go to the bathroom? I tried to time Rio but came up with a lot of inconsistencies. Sometimes the interval between the time she poos is 30 minutes, but at other times it is 10 minutes. I think it depends on how much she's been eating? I would love to potty-train her though.
Mrs.Birdy
06-16-2003, 03:43 PM
I really couldn't say. When he's eating in his cage or on his playstand, it seems like every 15 mins. When he's not eating he holds it longer.
He is also very inconsistent.
Somehow, he doesn't go on anyones shoulder but mine.
lol.

The more he drinks, the more often he will go. If you keep him drinking by sharing something, you can get cosistent timing. The more he has to go, the more likely you are to be successful at it.
Amanda

That's a good idea, JSimko. I'm going to try sharing a drink with her and see if I'll be more successful in my timing ... (hopefully)... :)
