Hello,
I have a 9week old Yorkshire Terrier. I got her last Sunday and took her to the Vet on Tuesday. The vet gave her the bordetella vaccine booster and that night my puppy started coughing. Since then she's still been coughing at mornings and at night and today around 2:30pm she vomited. I've been crate training her since day 1 but i feel soooo bad that she's sick that it's put everything on hold.
I called the place I got her from and they said i should administer .5ML of pediatric robitussin to her 2x's a day. Is it safe to use pediatric robitussin?
Sorry one more thing....My vet prescribed Revolution for her but i read online that we shouldn't give that type of medication to our pets if they have not been tested for heartworms yet...but my vet says my little diva is too young to be tested......Catch-22 anyone? :(
i'm so confused she is my first dog.

...the puppy could have gotten Bordetella from someone else at the clinic. Also, the vaccine is putting the virus into the dog. Did she get the shot or the drops in her nose? Also, the Bordetella vaccine is a lot like the flu vaccine, there are so many strands that you can't protect against them all. Besides, no vaccine is 100%.

Yes, it is okay. Most of the medications for humans...are the same for animals.

If the pet is under 6 months of age, you start them on prevention. If the pet has heartworms, they don't grow into adults until around 6 months to a year. So, giving the prevention will take care of the microfilaria (babies), and prevent the pet from further infestation.

thank you so much for clarifying!!!
i read up on the injection she got which was Nasaguard-B (sp?) and it said it was an avirulent live culture...so perhaps that's why she's coughing?
and thanks for explaining about the heartworm....i'm considering taking her to a new vet because the vet i took her to did not meet my expectations.
all he did was listen to her heart and check her ears. I had to ask for her booster shot and about heartworm and even then he didn't explain to me much except he showed me some pictures. When i asked about her getting tested all he said was "she's too young to get tested" and proceeded to applying Revolution. I let him because obviously he's not stupid but I just wish he was more informative.
again thank you and as I see from all your other posts you are a fountain of wisdom.

..I agree, you need to feel close and at home with your vet, and if they do not offer that...get a new one. She's not too young to be tested, it's just pointless as that age when giving her a dose of prevention would be cheaper and not a waste. Thanks about the "fountain of wisdom" part...I think my head just grew a bit in size. :)
