I have a 3 month old puggle that smells like wet dog all the time. I have given him baths and he still smells. The smell is very nauseating and i was wondering if anyone could tell me why he smells and what I can do to make him not smell? i have a 8 month old Yorkie that gets baths less often than the puggle and he does not stink at all.

Are you making sure you are cleaning really well in between the creases on his face? Dogs with short snouts and creased faces like pugs and bulldogs tend to 'snot' a lot and a lot of stuff gets stuck in those creases and can cause buildup and even sores. Make sure you clean really well in those creases.

What are you feeding him and what are you using to bathe him?

Are his teeth in bad shape? What do you bathe with? What are you feeding? There are many, many things that play a role in a dog's odor.

I use baby soap to bathe him. I have always used this for my other dogs. He does not have defined creases in his face just yet. I am feeding him Purina puppy chow BUT he has been eating Purina dog chow for about a week before I got him on puppy chow. His teeth are clean. The vet checked his teeth when I had him in last Friday.

Did you talk to the vet about the smell?

No not yet he has a follow up appointment in 2 weeks and I planned to say something then.

...is he losing any hair?

Some people have said that Purina - Chows cause a really smelly odor in their pet's waste. So, you may need to change his diet. Every dog is different. Chica and my cat both eat Purina -- Chicken and Rice and neither of them stink.

No he is not shedding any more than a normal dog sheds. His waste does smell REAL bad. He is still in the process of house breaking so when he has an accident in the house we know immediately. but if you pet him your hand stinks real bad so its just not his waste its his pores too. He had diarrhea due to a change of dog food from what his previous owner was feeding him (she was feeding him Olroy) to what I started feeding him. And it cleared up after I started feeding him puppy chow. So do you think if I change it again the smell will go away.

...be careful when changing foods too often. Especially with a puppy. But, it may very well be his diet. Definately see what foods your vet will reccommend for this little guy.

Make sure to talk to your vet and see what they say. Many times skin and odor problems are caused from the inside out. I would switch to a better quality food. I know you have recently switched so you will want to do this slowly, as to not upset his digestive system more than it may be.
Good luck.

I switched from the olroy to the puppy chow. I did a slow change and have had him on the puppy chow for about a week. I wonder if I try the puppy chow for a little longer and wait til his stools are more solid maybe his smell will go away.

My Mastiff eats Purina One and she has some horrible gas and poo. Other than that she smells fine! You could probably ask the vet to check the anal glands. If they are messed up it will smell horrible constantly. My mastiff also had Parvo and had a foul odor the whole time she had it. Thankfully she is fine now. I use doggie perfum on my pooches! You can buy it at PetSmart!

I totally forgot about Anal Glands! (Shame on me!) : )

And see, another person saying Purina make's 'em stinky! (Chica eats P. One, too...she doesn't have any creepy smells...but, when she's got gas...you know it!)
