I just bought a very small kitten two days ago. The store we bought her from estimated her to be 6 weeks of age. We are a little concerned since she is not eating nearly enough! I first tried to feed her the Royal Canin babycat food for kittens 1-4 months. She did eat it, but only nibbles here and there. Today we called the pet store to ask what food they had been feeding her to see if she was having trouble switching foods. The told us the food we had for her was better, since they hadn't been feeding her a kitten version. This afternoon I went and bought her some canned food. Again, she ate it and acted interested initially, but she soon walked away and only consumed about a tablespoon. I have also noticed a drop in her energy level since we first brought her home. I am trying to get her to the vet tomorrow, but is it possible that she hasn't been properly weaned? What should we feed her?
-thanks!

Well, I think 6 wks is too young to be given away. Was the kitten w/ her mother at the pet store? The only thing you can do is take her to the vet and get her examined. She is still VERY young and probably won't eat very much at one time. Good luck and hope to see pics soon:)

6 weeks is too young to be away from mom, she may be weaned, she may not be. But, she needs many frequent feedings versus getting her to eat a lot at one time.

When I got my kitten, he was about 5 to 6 weeks. He ate every 2-3 hours and I feed him with a syringe (no needle) a mixture of canned kitten food and kitten milk replacement. I used Blue Buffalo canned kitten food. It comes in a small 3oz can so you don't waste as much food and it is almost like a puree so I could easily mix it with the milk replacement. I also warmed up the food and I could really measure out what my kitten ate with the syringe. Good luck!

No, the kitten was not with her mother at the pet store. But, she's been doing somewhat better! I've been feeding her every couple of hours with some canned food, and she's is eating a little more. She has a vet visit tonight, so maybe i'll learn her true age. Thanks for the advice!:) (How do you display pics?)
