My cat understands what the litter box is for, but she still refuses to pee in the box. She'll do the rest of her business there, but she will never go pee. She always goes under our bed. Is there a way that I can teach her to use her litter box for both things?

I think first I'd take her to get checked, sometimes cats with a bladder infection hurt or burn when they pee and they can blame it on the box and try a different place.
Second thing, another litter box. My gang has it divided, this box is pee box, this is the poop box and they seldom do one in the other.

HI, you might also want to try another litter brand, I used to have the same problem with one of mine, turns out that the litter was not absorbing fast enough and her feet were getting wet, it wasn't happening when she pooped. Just a thought before the vet bill. Good luck! Tammy

Thanks so much for the suggestions. I never thought of any of those things. Is there a particularly good brand of kitty litter that has a high absorpbency power?

I agree, a trip to the vet may be helpful to rule out any medical problems, cats are known to get urinary tract infections.
Also thought you might be interested in this site when looking for kitty litter... good luck!.

How old is your cat? When we first got our cat from the pound he was a baby and not yet box trained. I would notice him sniffing or getting in pee position then I would grab him and run him to his box. After awhile, same problem as you he would poop in the box and pee behind our woodstove. I blocked off the woodstove so he could not go back there and would take him to his box if I noticed him over there. By the time winter came round and we removed the blockage so we could use the stove he was peeing in the box like a pro and never went pee on the floor again. Also clean the area where she has been peeing really well. The smell and habit of it may be encouraging her to continue the bad habit. Hope you get the problem solved. Just another idea, maybe to yucky, but you could put a box under the bed where she has been peeing and slowly move it towards your desired location.

You know, my one cat does this as well.
It is a behavioural problem with him. Also, I think it is a little bit of seperation anxiety as well. Sounds funny, but I think it is.
First, get the vet to check him out. She may have an infection of some sort. That causes them to pee where they shouldn't. If everything is alright, then it is some underlying problem. How many cats are in the home? Other pets? With my cat, I think the probelm also is that he is very timid. He loves his brother and sister, but they also upset him too.
I wish you luck with this problem. I know it is annoying, but basically this is usually a cry for help from them to you. Listen :)

Actually, I just moved out of my parents home where there were 3 other dogs, and she no longer has the problem. I do have a puppy now, but she actually uses the litter box. Thanx for your advice though!

Yes i agree also.. take him to the vet. he may have a bladder infection
My grandkids cat was doing the same thing, they were blaming her for a behavior problem. I suggested taking her to the vet, and she had bladder infaction--Big Time, had to take pills for a month. Boy, that was not easy! Cats don't like taking pills, but we finally mastered it and she went back to the vet yesterday and she is okay again. Another thing besides having 2 litter boxes (one to pee in and one to poop in), maybe trying for a few days putting her in a small confined room, with her litter boxes, and food and water and maybe she will start to use the boxes. They also like them to be cleaned out real often. My cat Tasha is very prissy about clean boxes. I too use the "clumping litter". It is not as messy, easy to clean out of box and keeps odor down. I get the "Scoop Away" brand and it lasts a long time. Good luck with you cat. DeeH

My cat Jessie (age 12, female) pees outside the box, too. I have had her checked quite often for infections or other things, but she seems to just do this for spite. It's all behavioral; Jessie is very stand-offish and skittish. I have 4 total cats (Jess was the first), and she is the only one who has problems like this!
I have 3 litter boxes, and like a poster mentioned above, the cats will choose one to poop in and one to pee in. Mine do this! But Jess still insists on peeing OUTSIDE the box, right next to it, on the carpeting. I have had new carpeting installed in my house and I spray the carpet regularly with those enzyme treatments, but it still doesn't work.
I also tried Feliway... I have the plug in. It doesn't work, either, as far as I can tell; she stopped peeing in one room and started peeing in another.
I have come to the conclusion that I am just stuck with a peed-up carpet for the next few years. I won't give her up for the whole world, she's worth more than the carpeting so this is just life!
Thankfully for me, neither of my cats have these problems!
