View Full Version : Taking Kirby to camp?

Hi everyone- I need your advice! In about a week I'm going to a music camp a couple hours away from where I live, and am debating on wether to bring Kirby with me or not. I'll be staying in a very nice college dorm room with one other person (my cousin), and would love to take him along with me. The main reason is that if I leave him home, my mom will have to take care of all six birds, and I know they won't get as much attention as I'd like. Being away from everything familiar would also be good for Kirby I think. I'm not sure if it's even allowed, but he's so quiet and fairly clean that I think it'd be ok. I would pack plenty of food for him, a first aid kit, all his toys, etc. to take with me. I'd also probably clip his wings to be on the safe side, though they haven't been clipped for the past few months. By the way, the camp is ten days. So, what does everyone think?

Hi Jenny,
At first I thought NO, Kirby might away or lost - but by the time I got to the end of your thoughts (you covered that problem) and I changed my mind...........all in the space of 60 seconds.

It is not like you will be camping in a tent and some animal could harm him while you are away, because you say you will be in a room.

I wish I had socialized Angel more........and maybe she wouldn't be having so many plucking problems at this time. I plan to try doing more socializing with Angel.

So, in conclusion - if it is allowed by the school and your cousin doesn't mind sharing the room with Kirby - then I would say go for it.

Let us know how it goes. GOOD LUCK AND HAVE FUN AT CAMP!
By the way - are you studying an instrument or doing vocal lessons or what?

A kiss from my flock to yours,
Diane

Thanks for your thoughts! I forgot to mention, there are two doors to go through before you get into the dorm room. First is the door from the hallway leading into each suite, then a second door leading to each individual dorm (there's two connected, each with separate doors). Each door has a key and everything as well. I completely trust my cousin, and there would never be anyone else in the room without me in there, so Kirby would be very safe I think. So for now, like you said, if it's allowed, then I'll probably take him with me unless anyone else brings up any potential problems that would be risky. And to answer your last question, it's a violin/viola/cello camp so I"ll be studying violin with a bunch of other people. Thanks again! :) (btw, Kirby says "hi" to Einstein!)

Go for it Jenny. You'll probably be better off with him there so you won't worry so much about him.

P.S. I play violin, too. I started playing at the age of 10 yrs. old. I haven't been playing lately.....and hope to pick-it up soon.

Have fun at camp with your feathered companion.

:)

Thanks for your input. Yeah, if for some reason I don't take him, I'll probably be a nervous wreck worrying the whole time!!! lol Of course, I'll still be worrying about Mortie and all the others...

How much free time will you have there to spend with Kirby?

If you change your mind once you're at camp, how hard would it be to get him home? How many days is camp? If you can send him home if you need to, I say take him!

I will have the morning and evening to spend with him, some time during lunch, and another hour or two throughout the day. If for some reason I absolutely had to get him home, I'm sure my mom would drive up to get him, though I can't think of any reason that that would happen. And last of all, the camp is about ten days.

Sounds good, I hope you both have fun. Since I have heavily socialized my blue and gold, I can say that he enjoys any chance he gets to get out of the house with me for a while.

Have fun. I have to go to band camp in August because I play the flute. But it is all outdoors so Sophie and Pumpkin will be staying home.

Well, I've sort of made up my mind-but I'm still not sure if it's allowed! I will try to call the director tomorrow to ask, and then let you all know! I really hope it works out, it'd make it feel way more like home! Mrs. Birdy, I'll try to learn some new violin techniques for you! :)

I don't think I'll be able to take him after all and I'm so disappointed! My mom suggested the idea originally, but now she said that she thinks they'll probably not let me. Also, I'm not positive now that I'll be rooming with my cousin (I won't know for sure until I actually get there), and I wouldn't trust anyone else alone with him.

Hi Jenny,
In sixth grade I had a wonderful teacher named Mrs. Anderson - one of those teachers who had a reputation for being hard and everyone feared being placed in her class. However, she turned out to be one of those teachers who left a mark on my life. She had a wall hanging which said "Where there is a will -there is away! She taught that topic very well. I will always remember her.

So, my advise to you is don't give up too easily. First you should call the camp and find out if it would be allowed........ if the answer is a bird has never attended camp before ........explain to them that there is alway a first time. As far as your cousin being your roommate - whoever is driving you up must return home. If it is your mother, I am sure she will stay to see you are settled in. You should know by then who will be your roommate - if it is your cousin ....Kirby can stay (again if it is allowed) and if by some chance your cousin is not your roommate ...........your mother can take Kirby back home with her. You might find out that your roommate is an animal lover like you and be thrilled to have Kirby stay.

Remember to explain to whoever you talk to about permission - that you are a very responsible person (especially where Kirby is concerned) and it will make you feel more comfortable and relaxed to have him there with you. I hope this all works out for you.

Thanks for the thoughts! I will still do what I can to get it to work out, but time's running short since I leave in two days!

My birds would rather go everywhere than sit at home.

Same here. But Pumpkin isn't well enough behaved to go and Sophie demands to be in bed by 9:00pm every night. So it isn't feasible although Sophie goes places all the time with me.

Ok, I leave tomorrow in the afternoon for camp, and I haven't gotten the Kirby thing to work out, so he'll be staying home. :( Now I have to make a list for my mom on exactly how to take care of him! Once when I was gone on a trip I took Kirby to my dad to take care of, and practically made a book on how to take care of him! I think I covered every single aspect of bird keeping possible, I was so worried! My dad thought it was so funny ( I think it was five pages typed) that he even showed it to some people he knew! lol Anyway, I will be calling my mom every single night to check up on my birdie kids and remind her to play games with them and give them lots of treats!I even bought them a bag of human-grade dried fruit pieces to enjoy while I'm gone, and they love them so much that they probably won't even notice I'm not around! :D

have a good time at camp :) I left Hamlit over night with my family and they didn't cover his cage until 11:00pm and when I got home at about 5:00pm he was still coverd so a nice big list for your mum is a good idea

RELAX AND HAVE FUN! Sorry you were not able to work out Kirby going along with you - but everything happens for a reason.

I guarantee your mom will take real special care of your flock as mom knows how much you love them.

So, go and have fun and more fun.

Hey everyone, I'm back!!! It feels like forever since I've posted here, even though it was only 10 days! Everything went really well, and I ended up having a great time at camp even though I missed my birdie kids tons! My dad drove up to visit half way through, and was going to bring Kirby then but we asked my counselor and she said no, but that was ok- being away from them for such a long time made me appreciate them even more. I got home at about 1 a.m. and of course all my babies were asleep, but when I went in the room they all woke up so of course I got them each out and everyone got much loved head rubs! They immediately recognized me, and Kirby pressed his beak up against my mouth for kisses! It was so cute. Anyway, I look forward to posting more now that I'm back! I really missed talking to all of y'all and hearing about your birds!

Hi Jenny,
A big WELCOME BACK - missed you! Did you learn any new music while away at camp? I bet your flock is glad to have you back!
