My dog is a year old and has been on heartworm medication which is also supposed to take care of tape worms and other paracites. I just found out today that he has worms. It was raining so I had to take them out on a leash. I've never had to de-worm a dog because they've never had it before. We have two other adult dogs in the house who are also on a preventative. Should I de-worm them also and how do I keep them from getting it again? This is all new for me. How could he have gotten it?

Clueless.

At my last vet appointment my vet mentioned something about the heartworm pills that are supposed to also prevent several other parasites not controling them very well and recommended having my dogs de-wormed about 4 times per year to completely prevent it. Sorry, I can't remember her exact words but it made better sense the way she explained it to me.
I would probably have the 2 other adults dewormed as well or bring in a stool sample from each of them to be tested and discuss future prevention with your vet.
