:( LOST BLUE & GOLD MACAW (http://users.boardnation.com/~parrots_paradise/index.php?board=2;action=display;threadid=211) :(

Mickey, a healthy 11 year old, blue and gold macaw was originally stolen from his home in Salinas, Puerto Rico, on January 11, 2002. At time of abduction he
was wearing an ID band on left leg. Body size is considered small for a blue and gold. His wings have always been kept clipped - prior to January
11, he had only two flight feathers (one on each side) and last couple of inches of feathers have a ribbon effect. His nails at time of abduction were very long.
Words like "hello" and "hola" are common to his vocabulary... says "hello" as a way of saying "thank you"...and uses"ha" when he wants a special treat...or when asked a question. He also whistles several ways, including wolf whistle. As of this date,May 31, 2003, he has not been found. Owner is ABSOLUTELY
devastated by his loss. Mickey was adopted by his owner as a baby and has spent past 10 years prior to abduction with him almost 24/7...has been treated as a child, and is not a normal, caged bird.
Reward of $2000 is being offered for Mickey's safe return. There will be no questions asked, and his owner is appealing to everyone with compassion to help reunite Mickey with him. Information about Mickey can be forwarded to the telephone numbers 787-824-7007, 824-1611, or 484-7737...or to post office box 609, Salinas Puerto Rico 00751. Hi Parrot Man,

I feel so sad to hear about this! I've heard of birds flying away, but this is the first I ever heard of one being abducted! Does anyone know if this happens often?

I hope he's found and returned home soon!

Hi Love Bird B,

Yes this is now a common thing now even over here in the Uk i here of a lot of birds being stolen from there homes, but the more people that know about these birds the better the chance of them being reunited with there lost, stolen & found pets. Here is a page with some Lost & Found Birds (http://users.boardnation.com/~parrots_paradise/index.php?board=2;action=display;threadid=108)

I am shocked that someone was able to take the bird. My blue and gold who I hand raised from a little featherless ball of flesh would take somones finger off if they tried to take him. He will not go to someone he does not know and will fight like mad. And if I am not around the only people he will go to are my parents. I am very sorry about your loss, however I would say it is safe to assume that whoever took your bird probably took a pair of wire cutters to the band and removed it. That is the reason that I had Taz microchipped.

 Yes you are correct Macaws would take the finger's off anyone that would try to steal them and lift them away, I feel sorry for the person that posted there lost Blue & Gold in my own Forum but the more people that here about this hopefully they can be reunited with there pets. I think all bird owner's should get them Micro chipped it is easy for the theft of a bird to remove there ring but you should pay a little more for a bird to be chipped also for it own security.

I think that whoever took his bird did not know much about birds, because the older they get, the less they are worth. Anyone who knows birds also knows they are worth the most as babies. The only people that Taz is worth anything to as a pet are myself and my parents. By the way I also treat all of my birds as if they were my children. Also check out the picture of the baby robin that I am raising in the parrot pics forrum under the thread a baby robin. I am hoping to finish raising it and teach it to find worms on it's own and then release it back into the wild.

:(

I doubt I will ever understand such monstrous acts. Are these cretins robbing homes and taking birds just because the birds happen to be there, or are they breaking in homes to specifically take only the birds? If this has become some kind of "bird black market' is it a good idea to post our pets on the web for everyone to see? I'm thinking it's comparable to posting pictures of our kids on the web for all psychos to see?

Sorry for ranting, but news of all this has me really disgusted.

I agree, it's really terrible. A lady I know of had her umbrella cockatoo stolen a few months ago, and just found him a few weeks ago. He was sold to a pet shop and then re-sold, and the lady who bought him soon after saw a flier up and was sure that he was the same bird. When his original owners went to the house to look at him and see if it was theirs, he ran up and started saying "I love you" over and over to them! Too bad that all stolen birds aren't that lucky! :( By the way, I think that people who steal them know they're in there and have planned how to take them for the most part, anyway.

I have read so many stories about birds being stolen and I think it's terrible. There was one article about an amazon that got stolen 2 feet away from her owners. Her owners heard her screaming but by the time they got to her cage, the "kidnappers" were already gone. It's such a sad story. My husband and I were talking about this before and I asked why anyone would steal an adult bird? Why not get a younger one that you can train yourself? My husbands theory is that these birds are being stolen by drug users and that they are stealing whatever animals they can find and then selling them cheap for drug money. That really disgusts me that some people can do things like that!

Anyway, if anyone's interested...here's a link to Mariah's site (lost Amazon parrot). http://www.mariahsmisfits.com/

I hope and pray that the B&G Macaw will be found soon. That all lost birds will be reunited with their owners.

Even if they steal an older bird, they can sell it at a bird show, to a petshop, through the classifieds, and other places and tell the buyers that it is a young bird. Since birds don't exactly show all that many "aging" signs, it'd be pretty easy to trick someone. I doubt that anyone stealing a bird intends to keep it themselves, but rather wants to sell it and use the money. That way too, if someone does find the bird, the "birdnapper" won't be easily linked with it.

I have to add that the bird is probably now a pet for someone who lives within the same country that the bird was taken, because you can get a baby blue and gold for what someone would have to spend on illegally having it brought into another country. I mean you would need someone who knew what they were doing to get it passed the security at any airport or for that matter any business that handles worldwide travel. It cannot be worth the price to get an adult bird who will probably never like you. The other possibility is that the bird may have escaped a burglary, was anything else taken?

If I were you I would start looking in countries where blue and gold maccaws are illegal to have. If they are illegal to own, that is the only reason that I can think of to obtain one illegally.

I will do everything that I can in my area. I wish someone would come up with some kind of internal tracking device so someone who lost a bird or had one stolen could find it again.

Yeah, wouldn't that be nice! I'd bet that Mickey is somewhere in Puerto Rico still since like you said, it's very hard to smuggle somethign like that out. I was in Puerto Rico last year and when we were leaving, our bags were checked extremely carefully and they didn't even let us bring home some walnuts we had picked- so trying to get a b&g macaw out of the country would be really hard! I know it's possible, but it'd be far easier to sell it to someone else there a ways away.
