I do quite a bit of work on Petfinder.org and one of my fellow recue stations said that her 'teil died of "the Clap". I emailed her back asking her what she meant, because I feel I'm pretty educated in avian disease and I've never heard of "the Clap" in our feathered friends. Any ideas what this may be?

How strange.

The clap is gonorrhea in humans. Can birds contract gonorrhea? :(

Form everything I've read birds can not contract gonnereah... I'm hoping she emails me back soon. She said her vet said all the birds at that pet shop had it...and I love that shop. For Roseann - She got him at Pets Choice. I'm so lost. Did you see any sick birds there?

Oh no! I love that place. Hope all is well with them. I am going to ask the bird manager, I talk to him often......and no, I have never noticed any sick birds. Keep me posted.

I know how you feel. Then again, this rescue station I heard from is mammals only, so maybe she got the wording wrong, since she is not very familiar with birds. I hope so. Or maybe she got Fin and Fang and Pets Choice mixed up... I'm awaiting her email.

I'm pretty sure "the clap" is chlamydia. Psittacosis is a type of chlamydia, so it's one of the more common bird diseases. My budgies had psittacosis and are able to live long healthy lives, but could transmit it to other birds, where it could quickly turn lethal.

Yes, maybe what that girl meant to say was Psittacosis (Chlamydia) as sleepy2 said. Maybe she just forgot the name of it and called it "the clap" because Psittacosis in birds is also contagious and transferrable to humans.

Very interesting....and I think we should all get more info on this to better understand it and it's affect on our pets.

I will do more research and post anything I find.

I talked to someone at a local pet store. She said that the term "the clap" can refer to Psittacosis. She is also a breeder and has many birds of her own.

Yes, I too went to our local pet store and asked about it. The proper term is psittacosis. :(
