New Cockatiel

I just got a cockatiel, I've had him for about 2 weeks and he's about 12 weeks old. I was wondering at what age cockatiels usually begin to talk. I was also wondering if maybe my cockatiel is too attached to me... When I put him back in the cage and walk out, he squawks for about 5 minutes unless I come back; and if I set him down and walk away he flys at me (as well as he can with clipped wings). Is this normal behavior?

I would trim the flight wings down so he cannot hurt himself. He will talk little later, he is bonding now and too closely it sounds like. Do not spoil him, maybe you need to get a Budgie for company. Do you have him hanging by a window to look out? I always do mine, they love to watch and mimich the wild birds. Keep repeating his name and whatever you want to start him on, P words seem easier to learn.

you tiel just came from the nest not to long ago sounds like. i have tiels as well and i'm not sure exactly what age they start talking, if ever. they are more whistlers, than talkers but some do talk. just keep talking to him work on one word at a time.
and i feel like sheplovr get him a budgie. seprate cages... if you do not want anymore birds yet. then you will just have to walk away. if you know he is fine. because that is how they get our attention right? he is learning to associate his yelling to you coming to him. and that is normal. so just ignore him. put him near a window. turn the radio on let him listen. not loud and keep a night light on. one than comes on auto and go off when it's light.
tiels are spooked easily. just give him time he is ever so young.
also look on the internet any search engine. lot's of great info for you about your tiel. google yahoo ask any of these. good luck too you. have fun with him. they make the best friends. males are more talkative than females. but i have a female that is very verbal. :D anyway good luck.;)
