Hi!
Our 10 month old German Shepherd has suddenly developed a problem with his lower lips. On lef sides of his muzzle, his lips are red, slightly swollen and no longer resting firmly against the jaw. His appetite and over-all mood seems to be ok.
Attached is a picture of the problem.
Is anyone familiar with this problem? I'm so worried. I can't take him to a vet until Monday. Please please help.
Thanks,
Sanya

Could be an allergic reaction -- have you changed anything at all in his diet or surroundings just before this began (new treats, for instance?) I don't know what part of the country you're from weather-wise, but could he have been stung by a bee or other insect? Does he seem "itchy?" (Rubbing his face on the carpet? )
If you think it might be an allergic reaction, you can call your vet and see if he thinks giving some Benedryl would be a good idea (and he can give you the proper dosage).
When my setter got stung by several bees, the swelling started in his jowels and progressed throughout his face pretty quickly. Benedryl eased the swelling within 30 minutes or so. This seems like a fairly mild reaction so far -- but I'd definitely keep an eye on it and be prepared to call the vet should he experience any further swelling. The fact that his behavior seems normal would also seem to point to a simple allergic reaction -- and nothing to get overly concerned about -- as long as it doesn't progress.
(Easier said than done, I know). You can also type in the word "Benedryl" on this forum's seach box and see what other posters have to say about similar "mysterious" swelling/welts, etc....
Hope this helps.

Paws4Prayers
I just wanted to update you and thank you for taking out the time to response. I took my dog to the vet today and it turns out the he has a bacterial infection most probably from dust/dirt. He loves to play in our backyard for hours and most likely picked up something from outside. The vet has prescribed something for the next couple of days and said he should be perfectly fine soon. I'm so releived.
I'm also quite grateful for having people like you out there - who take a little time out of their own personal lives to reach out to others. Keep up the good will.
Thanks,
Sanya

Thanks for the update -- so glad it's something mild and easily treated (but don't they worry us silly sometimes?).
You are very welcome for the reply...like everyone else on this forum -- just "paying it forward." :)
Blessings!
