Wondering if anyone has any information on Kidney failure Stage 3 in cats. My Bella is 5 years old. She apparently had kidney disease at birth. She is eating and urinating and feels better once she got the fluids in her. Just wondering if anyone has some info.

I just lost a kitty last month to CRF.

End stage is not pretty. When you cat suddenly looses a lot of weight, begins to vomit every time it eats, stops eating altogether, falls asleep in the water dish, etc. it is time.

When they don't eat/drink their body does not eliminate waste and becomes toxic. It is a very uncomfortable time for them.

She is eating and drinking and has never had a problem with either. She just stopped eating the dry food but continues to eat wet food. How long did you cat survive this?
She is still playing and running up and down the stairs. Can it be anything else? I looked up the CRF and the only syptoms she has is the weight loss. No, vomiting or loss of appetite just lost some weight. Maybe about 3 pounds or so. She is still begging for food and drinking a lot of water.

My kitty lived with this for almost 5 years. It was about the beginning of October when he started to go downhill. He was doing o.k. right up until the second week of December.

If you are sure that it is kidney, you either need a diet that is very low in protein or has a very high quality single source protein. these are easier for the kidney to process.

There are other things that cause weight loss in cats. Thyroid, worms, stress, and others.

We have started her on Kidney Diet food. Wet food only.
I would be extremely happy with 5 years. Thanks for the positive feed back.
My vet made me feel like she was going to die tomorrow or something and was really pushing a kidney transplant on me and sounded excited about writing a referrel. When I spoke to the other vet, she said that my cat can be maintained for a while as long as I follow a renal diet and do the sub q fluids. Was there anything else you would suggest other then diet and fluids? Also was your kitty cold all the time? Mine sits in front of the heater after she eats and then she is active.
She has always been kind of a heater hog and we also live in Michigan!!

K.B. loved to sit in front of the woodburning stove. He would be hot to the touch, but just as happy as a clam to lay in front of that fire. Sometimes we would light a fire when we were not really cold, just because he was sitting all hunched up in front of the stove, looking cold.

I remember when our vet diagnosed kidney failure. My husband (who is a marshmallow) was devastated and just sure that we were going to lose that cat any second. I did the k/d food for a while, but the cat just did not like it. I switched him to Natural Balance Venison & Green Pea formula. They have a very high quality protein from a single source. He did really well on it.

When he started to go downhill he stopped eating the dry food. After a few weeks he stopped eating canned food as well. He ate tuna straight out of the can for a while, and then he would not even eat that. When he went 3 full days without food I knew it was time. He was 19.

What I suggest is that you cherish each and every day that you have with her. That is the best you can do, and she can't ask for more than that from you.
