View Full Version : New Cat
Hi Guys and Happy New Years to everybody. I just got a new cat. Although I'm always preaching about having a cat checked out before exposing it to other cats in the household. As it turned out my friend told me about this cat that was abandoned, well actually not abandoned the owner died at home. Some people vandalized the house and the other 7 cats he had ran away. This cat hid someplace in the house and my friend feed and changed the litter for this cat for a whole year. The cat stayed in this house all alone with no heat or anything all this time. My friend went over there every week to feed him. When he told me about the cat, I couldn't leave him there. The house was going up for auction and he would have ended up probably taken by the ASPCA and destroyed. He is such a lover. I was going to take him to the vet but I had an accident and my leg is in a cast. The problem is, I don't know how old he is. He's pretty big, so I know he's not a kitten. I know also he is strickly an indoor cat He's clean and loves people, he can't get enough affection. I'm trying to find a vet that makes house calls because I have nobody that can can me to the vet with him. Is there anyway to tell how old a cat is?

Congrats on the rescue!
Hope you're out of the cast soon. Post some pics when you can.
I'm not sure how you can tell how old a cat is...I'm sure someone else here will be able to give you some advice.

Bless you for giving this guy a home Lexi. I have no idea if there is a way to tell how old a cat is. Is there anyway to find out what vet the cat has been to before you took him and then you could call the vet to find out? Also you could check you phone book to see if there are any "mobile vets" in your area. Kind of like the businesses that drive around in their van to peoples homes to bathe and groom animals.
One more queston. Does anybody know what it means when a cat looks like he's marching in place. I thought he was kneeding but I'm not sure. I just checked his paw pads to make sure they weren't cut or bruised. They are totally pink I also checked to make sure he was never an outdoor cat and I know he wasn't but the condition of the pads.

Hi Lexi,
Congrats on the new baby. It is really hard to age a cat apart from obvious signs like size, condition etc but as he has always been a house cat it will be pretty difficult because he must surely be in pretty good condition. You have other cats, maybe by observing them and comparing with the new one you can get an idea of his age.
As for the marching on the spot - I would imagine he is kneading too. Does he always do it in the same place? Is it somewhere he likes the feel of? Or could he be marking out his territory?
Anyway, I know he is gonna be loved to bits.
Sorry to hear about your accident. Hope all goes well and you can get the cast off soon. Best Regards and good luck, Mandy
Well I've had Cody for two weeks now and every day he gets more loving. I'm still a little nervous about not taking him to the vet to be checked out because that is usually the first thing I do, but due to circumstances I can't right now. I do know that Cody had been well taken take of so I'm sure he was tested. He has no desire to go out, when I leave he runs to the door, not to go out but to keep me in, so now I am totally convinced he was never outside. He also never cried when I bought him home, he's perfectly content in my home.
