AMRT.NET is dedicated to facilitating adoption of shelter and rescue pets in the Southern California area. We believe there are a lot of pets euthanized in shelters while there are potential pet owners looking to adopt and cannot find them. The goal of the creators of this web site is to assist potential pet owners in finding a shelter or rescued pet.

The Senior Dog Project.
http://www.srdogs.com/
This is one of my crusades. It is hard enough finding homes for all the unwanted pups and young dogs in the world. The seniors get left behind. Everyone seems to want young dogs and don't even consider a senior. Please at least consider adopting a senior. They make wonderful companions.

I just donated Tummy Rubs for Stumpy. She is the third dog down the list. A lot of rescues have donations of this type and it is called virtual fostering. If you cannot actually adopt or foster a dog you can donate to it's care. Check with a rescue of your choice and see if you can virtually foster.

I am soooooooo glad I saw this thread!!!!!!!!!!!! My friend might get another dog. The only problem is she can't find any shelters close to her. She would have to get a small dog. Any help would be apprecitated!!!!!!!! The closest one is the Utah Animal Humane Society.

The Animal Care & Control Center in NYC is a great shelter They are incredible. The staff is extremely helpful and take care with each animal. I am amazed at how much they love the animals that come to their shelter. They turn away no animal.

This is a fabulous site! I just started volunteering for the SPCA Adoption Center in Raleigh NC. It's relatively new and once an animal gets here, it is safe until adopted. We really needed this here! That link is:

I recently signed on to volunteer with the SPCA, and after only two times with the cats I find I'm ether allergic to cats, multiple cats, or the litter. I did a scoop and feed for them for a couple of hours Fri night and here it Sun and I still feel like I have dust/hair in my chest?? Does this make sense to anyone? Now I won't be able to foster cats for them. :(

Dear fellow animal lover,
I just joined the group, so I'm sorry to introduce myself this way. I'm a Buddhist monk who lives in Sedona, Arizona. I am looking for people who love animals because I believe you would be interested in a special project I am directly involved in that is very dear to my heart and is of an urgent nature.
It is about saving the lives of dogs and cats from being euthanized unnecessarily, as well as helping to rescue animals from disaster situations, such as Hurricane Katrina.
The Buddhist organization I am part of set up an animal sanctuary for this very purpose right after Hurricane Katrina, and our group rescued over 150 dogs and cats from New Orleans (that's a whole other story!), reuniting or adopting out almost all of them by the following spring.
We have expanded our mission to include creating a dependable staging ground for taking in animals that are set to be killed in overpopulated shelters across the state of Arizona, so that we give them a chance to be fostered or adopted by a loving home. Did you know that over 30,000 unwanted or abandoned pets were euthanized in the Phoenix area alone last year?
The animal sanctuary we have created is called Tara's Babies Animal Welfare and it is situated on 148 secluded acres of pristine wilderness land in eastern Arizona called Dakini Valley.
Unfortunately—and this is why I am writing with some real urgency, and I
hope that you might help—this land is in grave danger of being lost right now.
We are asking all of our friends who might be able to help us, to go to http://www.tarasbabies.org to make a secure online donation so that this compassionate work can be continued in a big way. If you would prefer to give by check please send your contribution to Tara's Babies, PO Box 1142, Sedona, AZ 86339, marking the Memo Line: Secure the Lands!
Another way you can help is to circulate this letter and the PDF file to your friends who care about the welfare of dogs and cats. We must secure this land now! At this writing, approximately $400,000 of the $600,000 is pledged but that is based on real estate sales closing quickly. Anything you can do to help at this time is so gratefully appreciated by us and on behalf of animals everywhere!
You have my promise that your donations will be used to save the land and animals’ lives now and for future generations.
Thanks!
Sincerely,
Palzang
Tara’s Babies Animal Rescue at Dakini Valley
Dakini Valley is a pristine wilderness area in eastern Arizona and one of the last “island” properties surrounded by the 3 million acre Tonto National Forest. At 4,600 feet, Dakini Valley, formerly a cattle ranch, dates back to the late 1800’s, and is close to the geologically unique Mogollon Rim.
http://img122.imageshack.us/img122/2729/dv3copylr4.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
The Tara’s Babies animal rescue operation was launched two weeks after Hurricane Katrina. Teams drove to the Gulf Coast, rescued
dogs from the toxic sludge of New Orleans, and set up a temporary shelter at Dakini Valley. In late September of 2005 a planeload of 110 dogs was received by Tara’s Babies volunteers in Phoenix. Of the 150 dogs rescued all but 10 were adopted, fostered or reunited with their owners by spring of 2006.
http://img409.imageshack.us/img409/3755/dv4copyxt6.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
Securing Dakini Valley land for the future means Tara’s Babies can expand and continue to save lives by providing a place for dogs and cats that just need more time to be adopted. We are dedicated to eradicating the unnecessary euthanasia of healthy dogs and cats in Arizona with the ultimate goal of ending all euthanasia in Arizona.
Gordon Creek, which runs year round through the heart of Dakini Valley, is framed by huge sycamores and provides irrigation for fields and orchards, as well as a place to swim in the summer.
Working with forgotten and abused companion animals is life changing and deeply transforming—for animals as well as humans.
Tara’s Babies continues to take in feral dogs and those slated for euthanasia from overpopulated shelters in Arizona and elsewhere. Special training, gentle patience and a lots of loving care is transforming once reclusive and mistrusting animals into loving companion animals, ready for adoption.
Several meadows provide an ideal setting for building out Tara’s Babies Animal Welfare infrastructure and developing lifetime and hospice care facilities for abandoned, abused and unadoptable animals. Providing ongoing health care, nutritious food and loving care for animals saved from potential euthanasia
is a core mission. In addition, Dakini Valley is master planning a sustainable community utilizing solar and wind power, closed loop water/waste systems, water catchment, passive irrigation systems and permaculture farming
with full retreat facilities and hospice.
Dakini Valley has set aside 20 acres for Mark Johnson and the care of his six wolves, including Cheyenne, known as the “healing wolf,” as seen on PBS television.

I'd just like to add a cautionary note to this thread. The link listed above does NOT screen rescue agencies. I know for a fact that one particular "rescue" on this site is in fact unscrupulous and unethical.
PLEASE, if you are adopting, handle it the same as if you were buying a dog. There are unethical breeders, and their are unethical rescues. To learn more about recognizing an ethical rescue, please click here:

hey for all you pet lovers out there. Be careful when picking trainers to get you dog trained. I got my dog trained and came to find it came back worse off. They said money back gurantee, only if you buy other options. My dog will not stop peeing inside. He choose on everything in the house now.
I would like to also let you guys knw what can be done if you have had this happen to you. Visit Petzago.com and you can rank these business and weed out the scammers. Just watch out.

Saving Shelter Pets, Inc
www.savingshelterpets.com
Saving Shelter Pets is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) animal welfare organization. We are volunteer-based, with members located throughout the US, Canada, and beyond. We are a virtual community, bound together by our website and its online forum.
Saving Shelter Pets supports animal rescue work in many forms. Our Rescue & Transport Team moves adoptable companion animals out of high-kill shelters and into safe, no-kill rescues, in large-scale efforts (20-30 animals at a time). Most of the kill shelters we currently help are located in Georgia, where animal overpopulation is a huge problem. Most of our “receiving rescues” are located in New England and the Northeast – where there are generally waiting lists to adopt animals from rescues.
Our new, innovative Puppy Promises program keeps newborn puppies out of the stressful and unhealthy environment of a shelter. The Bernie’s Buddies Heartworm Fund provides money necessary for treatment and boarding for our heartworm positive dogs. Also, we are beginning to develop discount spay/neuter programs at some of the shelters we work with.
Many volunteers also use our website’s online forum as a communication and networking tool to promote other animal rescue work. You can learn more about Saving Shelter Pets by accessing the links on the left-hand side of our web page: www.savingshelterpets.com
We are always in need of new members. If you are interested in contributing to our work, volunteers can help in any number of ways. Feel free to browse the site and join our forum!
