I am trying to find out if it is safe to breed a male Westie to a female Pom. The The Pom only weighs about 3 pounds and the Westie is a normal size Westie. This is the Pom's first heat--she is 8 months old. Also how do I know when a female dog is ready to breed?
Thanks for any quick response.

Like a human child, they can reproduce when *teens*, it's better to wait until they are mature. At 8 months calcium and other nutients are needed for bones and growth, not for babies.
I'd talk to my vet about the size difference.
Myself, I wouldn't purposely crossbreed, there are too many unwanted, homeless puppies already, many of them expensive purebreds.

Hi annabeth and welcome :)
I agree with originalfatc... ask your vet. Is there a reason why you want to crossbreed.. or have puppies?. I've been involved in dog rescue for years now and there are many unwanted and euthanized dogs everyday because there aren't enough loving homes for them. Please think real hard when making this decision... and what will happen to the puppies when you bring them into this world ;). Best of luck to you.

Hi to Originalfatc.. and Squawksx3,
Thanks for replying! The female I have here to breed w/my long haired Chichuahua, is his size. Any pups born of this breeding will go to family and will all be neutered. The other female my neighbor has is a bit larger and her carpenter wants her to breed that female to a Westie. I think the Pom is too small and should have pups before even breeding to a larger Pom.
I am gathering infor for my neighbor so she can show the carpenter as she feel badly about backing out. I believe the lady will back out but I just want her to have information.
No unwanted pups from me either. I rescue many kinds of animals myself. Would either of you email me with information on breeding small dogs to larger dogs? Any information will help. I just bought a breeders book also and a book on Poms so I could read up on it. Thanks so much :>) Also, I have raised Purebred Poodles and plan to have Purebred Yorkies but again, only for family and they will be neutered.
