I'm hoping maybe the Vet might pipe in for this one. Anyway its possible my 6 yr old female cat may have pyometra,I have an appt with vet in morning. What I'm wondering is if there is a possibility that they may just be able to try her on meds first before automatically doing an emergency spay.Money isn't too plentiful right now with x-mas.Any in put appreciated

Sorry you have to go through this. If you have to do an emergency spay, hopefully the vet will work with you on a payment plan.

Wishing you the best.

I wouldn't wait to get to the vet honestly. That can be deadly if not treated promptly

please keep us posted

Let us know when she gets out of surgery and it all goes.

Sorry for your recent loss.

Thank you for taking the cat to the vet as soon as you saw that something was wrong and opting for the surgery (I know it can't be cheap).

We breed Yorkies and so far in 11 years we've had to have 2 females spayed because of pyometra. We hated to lose them as breeders but nothing is worth risking their lives. It is a very very bad infection.

Shes out of surgery and resting. I have to call tomorrow at 9:30am to see when she can come home. We lost a rottie in 99 to pyometra.I had no clue to the symptoms back then.It breaks my heart that I didn't know about this nasty infection. Thanks for the thoughts.

I'm glad to hear she is doing well. With something as serious as that, they really isn't an alternative because the infection can spread and kill the animal. She will be a happier kitty now that she is spayed too :) Best of luck!

Merry Christmas to me(NOT !!!!) $600.00 bill for the cat.Vet did not want to work with us at first. I had asked to be told if it was going to be a lot. They wonder why people can't afford to take care of their pets. She will be home today,my little 600 dollar kitty.

Glad she is coming home! Still amazes me how much the vet costs (human docs too) but it is definitely worth it. So I gather the vet decided to work with you finally?

Work with me in the sense of,250.00 on card and 2 post dated checks. I also find it hard to believe its this much more than normal spay when he took out the same parts.

They get you because it was an "emergency" situation, plus the extra medication and precaution he surely had to take to make sure he didn't rupture the uterus and spread the infection into her belly. He probably had to take a different surgical approach to avoid that happening.

This is the perfect example of why we need to spay and neuter our pets- $100 for routine spay or $600 for emergency spay.

Yes I agree, this IS why it is so important to not wait until the cat is older and sick to spay. Besides the many other reasons of course. But you live you learn right? Hopefully you will have al lthe rest of your pets altered as young as your vet will do it. Best to be done well before the first heat. Honestly, how the heck did you put up with her going into heat and not letting her get pregnant all these years? I don't think I could personally handle that hehe. Glad she is spayed and happy now.

I am glad it went well with the surgery but wow...$600.00 is a lot even for emergency surgery. But I guess like with anything else their prices have gone up.

As usual time flies and before I knew it,shes 6 yrs old.Sometimes her being in heat wasn't too bad,and normally I couldn't afford it.As far as keeping her from getting pregnant, my cats don't go out,and I usually have my males neutered right away. Why? cheaper, and they tend to be dirtier sooner than a female. Thanks for everyones nice responses.

Just another quick question if anyone can answer. Since the cat has been home from her spay I've been keeping her in the spare room to keep her quiet.Yesterday I just started lettting her out of the room coz incision looks great. Its been 8 days since surgery, and unless she went in 1 of the 3 cat boxes today,I have not seen any bowel movement in the box she has had all to herself for a week.Is this normal? I just gave her a little tuna w/vegetable oil this am just in case.Any suggestions? She goes for her 10 day followup Sat.

are you sure she didn't go in another spot?

usually if they go more than a few days I'd be a bit concerned. try some laxatone maybe and give the vet a call

being under and meds can cause constipation for several days
