My poor Lhasa Apso puppy ate just a little bit of chocolate (only what was left on the wrapper), but I know that just a little chocolate can do a lot of harm to such a small dog. She hasn't been acting like herself, sort of depressed. She's been moping around the house. She doesn't run for a toy anymore or wag her tail at all! Does anyone know what effect the chocolate had on this?

Stacie,
Welcome. First off your dog may have something else wrong with her. Like maybe she might have worms? or could just be the weather? But from eating that little bit should not really do damage. I had a large dog and she got a hold of a huge family size pack of Peanut butter cups. She ate all of them and even bit the last one for us to know it was hers. LOL. I was scared but she was fine and nothing ever happened to her for it. I mean a huge bag. So I wouldn't worry about a little piece. She might just have a belly ach. sometimes for bellyach's just make a little hamburge and mix it with rice. See if she will take that? Hope all is well she will be fine. Gail

Stacie,
While milk chocolate isn't as toxic as semi-sweet or baker's chocolate what level of theobromine a dog can tolerate is individual to each dog. I wouldn't take any chances and would call the vet immediately. More likely, Gail is right - but why risk it?
Keep us posted!

Maybe she liked it so much that now that she can't have some more she's all depressed? LOL hahahaha. I don't know. Like macassie said, call the vet.

Dear Stacie:
You've received alot of good advice from these nice folks, so they have covered most of what I would have told you. Just a little FYI that will maybe help. For a 40 pound dog to experience thiobromine toxicity, it would require ingestion of 16 ounces of semi-sweet chocolate. Therefore, it is quite unlikely that your puppy is feeling lousy because she is toxic. If she continues to exhibit signs of illness for more than a day, however, I would recommend a visit with your vet. Toy breed puppies can be quite sensitive to even minor health issues.
