My cat has been doing this on and off for about a year and a half now. She will start meowing loudly and hissing at people. However it is obvious that she means me no harm since I am able to pet her immediatly after she does this. It happens for a couple days about every other month and it started when my mother brought in a desk that she found sitting by a dumpster. She hissed at it first, then started hissing at us. Does anyone have a clue as to what is going on?

Has your cat been altered?

If you can trace her behaviour back to the time you brought in the desk, and if the desk is always her first target, it might have some lingering smells on it that she does not like. Perhaps even from another cat. . . you would do well to clean it as thoroughly as possible, even try picking up an animal odor cleaner at your local pet shop.

Oh, we got rid of the desk that same day. Forgot to mention that. But it is so random. The last time( a couple days ago) I was just grooming her when she started hissing.

This is gonna sound like something from a bad (or good) horror movie...

Maybe you brought in a ghost with the desk. Supposedly they attach themselves to objects. Perhaps the ghost stayed when the desk was thrown out. The cat may be hissing at the ghost.

Just a thought...
Not like I actually believe in ghosts...

Wow, that is exactly what my husband says I do about once a month. Weird, huh?

Not like I actually believe in ghosts...Actually, I was thinking the same thing too. At first we thought that maybe she was going to attack us, but since she hasn't yet I don't think that she ever wanted to. I read that cats are supposed to be able to see ghosts so it would make sense.
