My two sisters moved out of the house taking a couple of their cats with them. This made my dog Whisper rather depressed. He was sulking and whimpering and only moved when walking from one sleeping place to another. He ate but not with intuseasum and I was really getting worried about him and that his health would start detariorating. My mom's cat died because he was old and didn't recover from a cold that he had cought, my own cat then became depressed after he died and refused to eat. She ended up dying from it so it's only natural that I would be very concered that depression was now showing up in my Whisper =(
I thought that my solution to this problem was to get another dog. As Whisper was depressed because his beloved family was getting smaller. I always hear stories about how mother animal will get depressed after loosing their litter and will break out of it if another litter or even another animal is taken into their care. Now I know that Whisper is a boy and didn't loose his puppies, but not only did really loved all his family members, but my youngest sister was one of the family members to move out, and Whisper was soooo protective and worried over her wellbeing all the time. A good example being that when she went with me on walks Whisper would not stop turning and looking back behind him to make sure she was still there, he was only comfortable when she was walking infront of him so that she could see him.
So with getting Whisper a new baby to take care of on my mind I searched the newpapers until I found an add for malamute x white shepherd puppies. Which would have been perfect for him as Whisper is a extra large dog and I wanted to make sure that any other dog I got was as big as him because 1. I love big dogs and 2. I wouldn't have to worry as much about Whisper accidently hurting a smaller dog because of his size. Unfortuntaly the pups had all been given to new homes. But because the house was a small home shelter that rescuse unwanted, rescued or abandoned in puppies and finds them homes they did have others to choose from. A Chiwawa mix and a husky x labrador litter that needed for home.
I told him that I was hoping to find a puppy that would grow into a really huge dog, he then informing me that he actually had a 6month old husky x german shep that he was having trouble finding a home for that was already the size of a normal large dog.
Although it would have been perfect I wasn't too sure about bringing a 6month old puppy into the house. After all there are also five cats here. I thought that a husky x labrador mix would be a decent size but I wanted to check out the 6month old baby as well.
So I made the mistake of asking mom to drive me to pick up a new puppy. When we got there we were introduced to the puppies first, and they were so sweet. Then we were introduced to the big puppy in the back. Mom instantly fell in love with him, and begged for me to get him, but I still wasn't sure because of the cats. I decided that as much as I liked the big guy I had to concider our kitties and decided to get a puppy. Mom tried to talk me out of it, it always being easier for little puppies to find homes then it was for big puppies. I told her that if I could I would get both of them, but I only had 150$ on me. Enough for only one of them.
The guy though seemed pleased that we liked the dog though, as everyone else that he introduced to him thought that he was too hyper and that he was a pretty stupid dog. So he told us me if I was really serious about taking in both that he would let us have him for only 50$ He also told me that he should be fine with cats, as he never attacked his own pet cat.
So I came home with two puppies when setting out to get only one. The only thing that was on my mind was how much work this was going to be for me, I actually don't like puppies all that much because they require so much attention and work but I was willing to doing this for Whisper.
All regrets and uncertanty I had on the car ride home and the of course rought puppy introduction is now gone.
Whisper has never been happier. Not only does he had a large hyper puppy he can play and scrap with but he also has a little babby that he can look after.
Of course it isn't perfect, the puppies are a lot of work for both me AND Whisper. Whisper actually helping me a lot with training the puppies because he KNOWS the rules of the house and corrects them if they are doing something they shouldn't. Then of course sometimes there are little disputes regarding pack order, which Whisper quickly resolves becuase he is husky dog (a born pack dog) that is the size of a 130 pound german shepherd.
Whisper does get tried with dividing his attention between both puppies with playing and teaching them the rules, but I have not seen him happier then he is now. And I'm happy too even with all the work they're giving me because I now have three wonderful puppy-dogs to spoil.
