View Full Version : Heartbroken
I don't know where to start. I own 3 dogs and a cat. Last night I came home and found two of the dogs with my cats body. I've had this cat for half my life and am devastated that she died like she did. I feel responsible and heart sick. I don't know what to do about the dogs. I've had 2 of the dogs for over 2 years, and had recently added a puppy to the mix. (about 3 months ago.) I don't know what to do. Part of me still loves my dogs, but the other is horrified that they killed my sweet old cat.

I'm so sorry that you experienced that.
What kinds of dogs are they? Have they always gotten along with the cat? Have the dogs ever shown any aggression in the past?
Don't know what else to say except sorry for your loss.
My thoughts are with you.
husky/shepard mix 3 yrs old
husky mix 2 yrs old
lab mix 6 months old
The oldest mostly ignored the cat, the puppy was very curious about her. She was used to the older dogs, not friendly, but would go up to them and sniff, I thought the interactions were normal.

Those breeds aren't really known for aggression (I believe). You'll probably never know what happened or why.
Don't make any snap decisions right now about what to do with the dogs. I would keep the dogs responsible isolated for now though. Maybe get a vet check done to see if there is something wrong that caused this to happen.
I just don't know.
Not sure what else you can do. Hopefully someone else here will have some ideas.
I'm so sorry.

Oh Tamz, that's just awful. :( I'm so sorry. I know what I would do but what you do is up to you. I'm sure you had no idea that this would happen.

I am so very sorry to read about your loss. Now I apologize for asking here --however I would hate to see the dogs unjustly blamed. So was there actual physical damage to your cat's body and that is what makes you believe the dogs are responsible? I only ask because if the dogs were just with the dead cat when found it is possible the cat died dueto something medical and not dog attack related.

My heart goes out to you, Tamz. It must have been a very traumatic experience. Just try to take it one day at a time for now. Don't blame yourself, there's no way you could have seen that coming. Wishing you peace and consolation.

Tamz I feel for you. One thing I'd like to mention is that the death of your cat was probably accidental, especially if she'd gotten along with the dogs for 3 years+.
The prey/chase instinct is strong in dogs. More so when you have a pack of dogs, and 3 dogs is a pack. What started in play most likely turned rough, and a fateful injury occurred. I very much doubt that actual aggression was involved, nor any desire to injure and kill.
I also had a kitten one time killed by my dog. They had even slept together, but the kitten was crushed during play. A horrible lesson to me, I wanted to blame my dog also, but it was not his fault, nor is it the fault of your dogs.
It is sad when things like this happen.
I hope your memories of your kitty get you through this tough time.
Thank you all for your kind words. As each day goes by it becomes a little easier.

I'm so deeply sorry to hear about your precious cat! How devastating that must have been!
I have a Husky and she has never shown aggression to are cat, we have had the husky since she was a pup and I think that has a lot to do with it, not sure how old or how long you have had the dogs, were they already full grown?
Are Husky did get my daughters pet rabbit and one day we came home and saw that she had killed her rabbit, that was pretty aweful, but dogs are known to eat wild animals.

I highly doubt it was intentional killing from your dogs i would guess she died and the dogs picked her up or the cat got hurt and died with same ending or something like that when a dog and cat have been together that long they learn to coop with each other but they don't have to like each other.
