Does anyone have any suggestions on how to give a dog medicine (a healthy way). Our bloodhound is having to take five different medicines right now and the only way I could get her to take them this am was to put them in cookie dough (I know that's bad, she would not take them any other way) and my husband was not here to just stick them down her throat. Now remember she's a bloodhound and can smell the meds through anything ie cheese & bread.

Any suggestions would be appreciated!:)

What we had to do with our Rottie (he also caught on to hiding in cheese and bread) was put the pills as far in the back of his mouth as we could, hold his mouth shut, tilt his head all the way back and rub his throat. This made him swallow the pills. After a couple times of this, he was happy with the cheese way.

We do the same as rstowe. Unfortunately my Anna still won't eat them in cheese, bread, peanut butter, treats, or anything else we can find!

If the pills are small you can hide them in canned food. The type that has some kind of gravy works well for this.

I like using hot dogs.

We just throw them down their throats and hold their mouth shut and up. Takes 2 seconds and is less stressful on everyone. Our beagle is on 3 meds and she takes all 3 in one go.

I do that too... but i've dealt with WAY too many dogs and cats that 'know' this trick, and somehow manage to hold on to the pill until you're not looking at spit it out. Some dogs will only take pills with food :P

LOL! They think they're so smart when they spit them back out, don't they? I used to find Anna's little pink pills all over the place! Now I place them in her mouth as far back as I can & hold her head up until she swallows. Once she looks like she has swallowed a few good times I'll open her mouth again & press her tongue down to make sure that the pills aren't still sitting in the back of her mouth. She hates it, I hate it, we all hate it, but its quick. :p

LOL. Yeah she tried that when she was little. But I think she realized if she just swallows she doesnt have to taste them. I practically push them down her throat though, and she swallows right away nowadays.

I have a golden who holds pills in her mouth like I used to hold peas (yuck!) in mine when I was a kid -- and then she spits them out when "mom" isn't looking. But now, I use a "piller" which I got from my vet. It's about the size of a regular pencil, with a plunger-type end and a "split" eraser at the top (it's longer than an actual eraser tip). The pill sits inside it (even big ones will sit there, a little awkwardly, but they will fit). Once it's "loaded" I pry open Grace's jaw, point the eraser tip at the very back of her throat and push the plunger, following with a quick moist treat to help her get it all the way down comfortably. She swallows the pill without even realizing it. What used to be a wrestling match has turned into child's play -- costs 4 bucks. Worth a million (whoo hoo!)!!! :D

Fortunately all I have to do with my Rottie (he has bone cancer and this is his last week in this world) is put my hand on his chin and open and he does. But, he likes to hide them in his lips and spit them out when I am not looking.
I do the same as someone else posted; tilt his head back and rub his throat and say "swallow".

Brinkley is a very good boy!! He eats some tablets...like his Fatty acid tab. The other...I crush them and mix in the peanut butter he loves so much. He just gulps it down :) .
Recently I got the crunchy peanut butter. It has pieces of peanuts and a tablet hidden in it....Brinkley can't make it out. Cheese works just as good too!!
