Hi Everyone

Perhaps someone could assist with a little issue we have going on here at the moment.

Fudge, our cocker spaniel, is nearly 1. She is just coming to the end of her first proper season.

It is now towards the end of 3rd week of season, prior to this 3rd week all has seemed perfectly fine.

She would happily go out into our back garden and go to toilet, whether it be wee or poo. She has been impecable up until now in her toilet habits.

The problem we now have is that she will not go out into the back garden on her own, when she is out there she instantly wants to come back in, refuses to go to toilet. She keeps weeing on the rugs in the house instead of outside, even if we go outside with her, she is still refusing to go to toilet.

If we take her to the park just around the corner, she goes to toilet as soon as she gets there. Often she doesn't even get there before going, she will go on the road instead.

When she goes poo, she lets out a yelp at the same time.
When she goes wee in the house, she doesn't do it discreetly, it is as though she can't hold it in and just goes as it happens.

She is going to the vet tomorrow and I was just wondering if anyone had any thoughts on what the problem could be?

Many Thanks
Freddy

Sounds like she might have a urinary tract infection. I know when cats have them sometimes they associate the pain with the litterbox and won't use it. Maybe the same thing happens with dogs. She might associate the pain with your back garden. Not saying this is the case, just guessing. Glad you're taking her to the Vet tomorrow.

Thanks for your reply Lehi.

Well we went to the Vets this evening.

Finger up bum... fudge didn't like vet ... vet emptied glands... fudge then liked the vet.
It appears that her glands were really full. Vet has emptied her glands and she seems much much happier.

Vet thinks that she might have a phantom pregnancy coming on. From the description of the way she has been acting it could well be.

We have some granules to add to her tea to help keep her poo's a constant consistancy and that should help her glands etc. She hasn't changed food in past 4mths so it should help things become stable again.

Will keep all updated as to how things work out over the next week or so.

Thanks
Freddy

Interesting. That is something I obviously never would have guessed. I'm glad she's feeling better and hopefully she'll continue to improve.

That makes sense as far as the pooing problem, but that doesn't explain the peeing, did the vet think that this was a phantom pregnancy coming on? that doesn't make sense to me. I would wonder if she has a UTI or maybe even crystals in her urine. Hope she gets better.

If she's associating the garden with the pain, that'll be why she wont even wee out there. She'll soon realise that it's not the garden that was hurting her :p

As for the gland problem, is it just a course of the 'granuals' or is it ongoing?
Mixing a spoon of bran in with her food everyday should bulk up her stool and help empty the glands. I expect this will be cheaper than what the vet has given you.
