I just got home from the vet. We have a new (7 week old) puppy, named Dakota, that we got from a flea market this past Saturday. Yesterday she started to throw up and have diarrhea. Yes, she does have worms, but that is not my greatest concern at the moment since I know THAT can be taken care of. My greatest concern is that she tested a hot positive for Parvo. The first thing out of my mouth was "How about the children?" No, they can't get infected. They just need to immediately wash their hands with either ammonia or bleach mixed with H2O after handling Dakota. The next question, "How about our 3 year old dog (Biscuit)?" No, she can't get it because she's up to date on all her shots, including Parvo. The vet gave me some meds and told me to get some bleach if I didn't have any. He said that the spots she "went" on the carpet can be cleaned with ammonia, and the kitchen floor with bleach. Both mixed with H2O. The vet also said that since we started the day after the symptoms started, that there's a good chance of survival. I have told my 5 year old that Dakota may die and he is not to touch her at all. He can sit on the carpet and talk to her, but as much as I love the dogs, I love my children more. This is REALLY PULLING AT THE HEART STRINGS. Has anyone been through the same thing? How did it work out for you? HELP PLEASE!

Pavo is a canine disease, not transmittable to humans. The main purpose of such intense disinfecting is to make sure pup doesn't get reinfected, as it is a tough bug and hard to wipe out completely during the dog's recovery.
Love her, pet her (otherwise she may feel she did something wrong) Then Wash Your Hands!

That's very sad. I feel bad for the puppy. You bought this dog at a flea market? I hate to be nasty....but what were you thinking?! I would track the people down that sold the puppy to you. I know there's a lemon puppy law in NY state. You could bust these people for selling you a sick puppy! Please be careful when you buy a dog. They aren't an impluse buy item. We researched breeders for a month. Then went to the breeder's house and saw the dogs and her home. We read their contract and had to send a deposit once the pups were born. All the pups are health guarenteed. Regardless of whether they are pet or show quality. Her pet quality are 500 which is damn cheap considering that you are guarenteed a healthy puppy!! I'm sure your vet bills to overcome the Parvo will be upwards of 500 bucks. I've seen many parvo puppies....and it breaks my heart. When all it takes is a shot or two to protect the pup from it.

This is a very sad story and you sound like a reasonable and knowledgeable person. I'm sure you bought the pup because you couldn't resist just leaving him there, not because you went to a flea market specifically to look for one. At least this sounds like something I would do and get some flak for, LOL!
I hope Dakota survives and my heartfelt sympathy goes out to you.

I work with a lady whoses puppy had parvo. Her dog was sick for 3 days before taking it to the vat. The dog was so bad off they kept it at the vet for 5 days and the puppy did pull through~although 2 weeks after that her boyfriend ran it over. I also had a neighbor whose puppy had parvo and it lived. So hang in there and let us know what happens!

UPDATE ON DAKOTA!
She actually did a little bit of running outside today! I took her out to do her business and to get some fresh air. I purposely walked away from her (only about 15 feet or so) and she actually ran to me! Then we went inside, I put her back on the chain in the kitchen (that floor is much easier to clean than the carpets, and she can see the whole house from that point) and I gave our other dog her treat for the day...Dakota got up from her laying position and started whining and barking! I thought I'd cry with joy! The dog (Biscuit) and Dakota can see each other through the sliding door and Dakota seems to like that.
Thank you for all your encouragement and support. For the record, no Dakota was not bought on a whim and we have seen the person that sold her to us there for quite a long time (meaning for the past year or so). Dakota and Biscuit may not be pure breds, but they are both loved and are well taken care of.

So glad to hear Dakota is doing better. Parvo is so scarey but it sounds like you caught it in time. And it sounds as if you do take very good care of your animals as you took him to the vet right away. Like I said, the lady I worked with waited 3 days and she probably only took him because we were bugging her. Hope you can post pictures soon. I'd like to see the little tuffy that beat such a deadly disease.;)

Years ago our daughter had a dog she loved so much...a black lab that got Parvo but she did not seek medical help in time. I have a friend who caught it early and her pet lived with the vets help.
I think it was a very loving.....compassionate thing to do...to rescue a puppy from a flea market. My daughter got her family one last year at a flea market and.... OMG........you would think they found gold. And they did not go with intentions on getting anything. It was eye contact and they fell in love with "Pongo" as my grandchildren call him!!!!!!
I applaud you for your loving nature and many a loving...dedicated...loyal dogs have been found in just those places!!!!!!!
I wish you luck in beating this disease and I pray you have many many years with your new member of the family!!!!!:)

I'm so glad to hear Dakota is doing better! She sounds like a very lucky girl for you to have gotten her in time, especially since you didn't get her on a whim, which I would have more than likely have done!
I'm surprised I don't have a bunch of rescues by now. If I do ever get a dog, it will probably be a preferred mixed breed, but who knows?
As Too Crazy mentioned, I hope we get to see a picture of the 'little Tuffy'!
All the best to you!

I am happy to hear that Dakota is doing better. I have never met a dog with parvo before and I totaly know what you mean wreedgarden. They don't have to be purebred to be loved! (Not saying that anyone says that)

Latest update on Dakota:
Dakota did not make it. She passed away, without any pain, yesterday around 11:30 AM.

My heart is breaking for you. Parvo is so unpredictable and so often deadly.
You did your best. The Rainbow Bridge has a new angel.
