Hi, everyone. I have a 6 month old puppy who is working on housebraking. He's doing pretty well eliminating outside ( inside too, but we are working on it!!) My problem is at night. I put him to bed at 11:00p.m. after his final walk. He goes right to sleep, but wakes up at 2:30p.m. to go out and every hour after until about 6:00 a.m. I take him out whenever he cries and he eliminates right away, and goes right back to sleep when we come in. He is doing the right thing by letting me know he needs to go out, so I have been taking him out. I have crated him for periods of 2 hours and he has eliminated in his crate, so I know he will eliminate in his crate if he has to. I dont know how to teach him how to hold his bladder for a time. I dont mind taking him out once in the middle of the night. But every hour is becoming a little much. Im tired . Any suggestions?

Hmm, at 6 months he should have a little more control. He may have a bladder infection, or maybe he has just figured out a little *pee* means another trip out to play and see you.

I would have him checked first, then work on other training suggestions.

I agree, at 6 months he should be able to hold it. A bladder infection is possible.

I would try not to let him have a large amount of water an hour before bed time. But I aggre have him checked.

having him checked is definitely a good thing....but when its close to bedtime dont give him water....is that mean?
It worked when i trained my dog....

If it's not a health problem, I would agree with originalfatc. When you take him outside do you play with him or talk to him? If so, just take him out on a leash and then right back inside to bed. If you're playing with him while he's outside, he thinks it's fun. My puppy would wake me up frequently in the beginning but I did what the others suggested and took the water away 1-2 hours before bedtime and then potty right before bed. Good luck and keep us posted!

Is the kennel to big for him? You may want to put a box or something in with him to take up space. They don't mind going in the kennel if they don't have to lay in it. This worked with mine, I bought the crate for the size she would be, and she would go at one end and sleep at the other!
