My 9 mo ch'weiner will not leave any collar alone. The nylon type she scratches and digs at, when I remove it, it is red and inflamed looking, just under her chin area, not all the way around. So I've two different leather types, rolled and flat, both she digs at, and both she found a way to chew off. She didn't do that part with the nylon.
I want her to wear a collar so her tags will be on at all times....
Any advice would be great:)
Thanks
Renee

Not sure if she is allergic to the collar or just doesn't like them. It might be that she doesn't like things around her neck. I've never experienced this so I really cannot comment about it.
But, the reason I responded to this post is because you had mentioned she was chewing the leather collar. Please be very careful with this. I had a friend who ended up with their dog in the vet ER after chewing leather. The chemicals used to treat the leather were toxic. She almost lost her dog.
Hopefully someone else can give you further information on the rest of your question.

It doesn't sound like she's allergic, it'll be red from the scratching, hence why it's only under her chin.
If the collar is tight enough (so you can slip two fingers underneath) then she shouldn't be able to get it in her mouth, but for the scratching at it, you'll just have to get her used to it... Somehow... *thinks*
Have you tried her on a harness to see if she has the same reaction? I just wonder whether it's just round her neck... Did you get her straight from the breeder or is she a rescue?

Try rubbing some cortisone cream on the area that is inflamed. This should help relieve the discomfort.

Wait to put another collar on until the irritation has cleared up completely. Try putting the collar on without the tags. It sounds like it may be the tags that are bothering your dog. If so, they make collars that can have a plate attached with name/phone number and are available in both nylon and leather.

If your dog can get her mouth on her own collar is is not fitted correctly, and is much too loose.

The same thing happened to my dog Tessa.. But it happened with a leather collar, we have bot been able to put a collar on her yet. It happened 3 weeks ago and we will be putting a nylon collar on her in a day or two

I would definitely try a harness or maybe one of those cloth covered collars (you can also buy the cloth cover seperately) Make sure they aren't too tight. Check out options at www.jakesdoghouse.com (thats where I got my dog's collars and leashes from)

Also, maybe get her microchipped since she hates the collar so much and might slip it if she gets loose. It's really cheap (the local SPCA charges $13)

Thanks for all the responses. She is collar-less at the moment. Someone asked....she is a rescue from our local humane society. I am considering getting her microchipped as it is inexpensive and would solve the collar prob:)
