I know it's always a good idea to start preparing your dog(s) for the fireworks at least a few weeks early, so thought I'd start it off.
Well, get everyone's suggestions anyway. This is the first year we've had a dog in the house, so don't have ANY exerience with it.

So can anyone give me, and everyone else, good solid advise?

I'll post this in cats too, as I guess things could be different for different animals

All dogs are different. My last dog was TERRIFIED of fireworks, even on television they would send her running to hide. The dog I have now is fascinated by them and will stand in the yard and watch them.

If you do not know how your dog is going to react, I would advise keeping him in the house. I spent 11 hours searching the Adirondacks for my dog one year. Hoping she had not gotten her leash caught on something or been eaten by a bear.

I'm obviously gonna keep Rocky inside, but he wets himself when it thunders, so god knows how he's gonna react to fireworks! I just think at his age he'll have a heart attack or something...
Has any used this DAP stuff before? It's not as expensive as I thought, so I'm considering it. Just wondered is anyone has found it useful...

I'm afraid I don't know what DAP is, but I wanted to share some information regarding thunderstom phobia in dogs. I recently read about a product called "anxiety wraps" (a garment for dogs that supposedly works with certain key acupressure points to alleviate stress from separation anxiety, thunderstorm/noise phobias etc.). I read about it in Dog Fancy magazine (the May issue, I think), and I told a friend about it who was having very similar issues with her Yorkie and thunderstorms. She ordered the product and she said she was amazed at her dog's (non)reaction to the next storm! While I can't personally endorse the product, there does seem to be something to it.

Here's the link: http://www.anxietywrap.com

DAP is Dog Appeasing Pheramone. Or something like that. It's what *****es release to comfort and relax puppies?
Don't you just hate it when you go online to buy one thing for your pet, and end up spending hundreds of pounds!!
Well I've ordered a DAP diffuser, so we'll see if it works... As for the wrap thing, I don't think he'd wear one, and he would look a bit foolish... Can I get one in pink, with sparkly bits?? :p

Hmmm, if they made one for humans I might just order one for myself, too (pink with sparkles sounds divine). But then, our canine/feline friends are the best "anxiety wraps" around (not the cheapest, but the best!!!). Good luck with the DAP (I can use the acronym with confidence now -- thanks Squashynose)! :D

I am not familiar with DAP, but Feliway is a pheromone based spray for cats that as been on the market for a while. I have a friend who has now used this and has been quite happy with the results.

We use Feliway at work when we're trying to tame the feral cats and kittens... Works wonders!
