Hi, new to the forums, thought you guys might be able to answer some questions before I decide to spend a bunch of money at the vet. I am the new dad of a jack russell pup, he's about 6 1/2 weeks now. My roommates and I first noticed worms in his stool yesterday, and he vomited one the other day as well. I did some internet research and matched the worm that I saw to a roundworm, and went to the pet store where I was told to give him "D-Worm (pyrantel pamoate)." My question is this, what type of effect should the medication have? Since giving Cooper the medicine there has been A LOT more worms in his stool everytime he goes. Is this what should be happening? A "cleaning out" of sorts? We're planning on taking him to the vet at 8 weeks for his first shots anyway, but should we make an early trip? Any help you guys could give would be appreciated as I am very new at this...THANKS!!

If I'm not mistaken, the medicine should force the worms out. Somebody here should be able to provide a definite answer. You might call your vet and ask if it is normal; if not they can advise you on what to do.

I wouldn't let the vomitting go for too long w/o seeing a vet. I don't know about the deworming stuff you bought at the store, but I suggest you take the pup to the vet now for the deworming. As far as I know, all puppies have worms and they are usually pre-treated by the breeder before going to the owner. But still, they may have other types of worms that weren't treated.

Congrats on getting a new pup!

I just recently had this problem with my 6 1/2 month old Newfie pup, Koda. Of course he was wormed as a pup. But about a month ago he decided to munch down a mouse. GROSSS to say the very least and I couldn't get to him before he swallowed. Anyhow, gave him the meds and haven't had any further problems. The vet did say that after giving him the meds any worms in his stool should be dead. I didn't notice any within a day of giving him the meds.
I did not, however, experience any vomiting with him. I would definately check with the vet about that.
Good luck.

There hasn't been any more vomiting, it was just that once. And I'll definitely check with the vet to see if it's normal, but from what I had heard the meds forced the worms out, so I guess you guys are reassuring. Hopefully we'll see the end of the worms in the next day or so, but if they continue in the stool we'll pursue other avenues. Thanks guys.

He might have vomited due to the meds initally upsetting his stomach. If it hasn't happened again, I would'nt be too concerned but I would continue to monitor.

Well, the vomiting was yesterday morning, which is what prompted me to go and get the meds. Couldn't have been that, but he seems to be doing fine, definitely monitoring.

With roundworms dogs will vomit them up, the meds don't have to do with it. They will vomit up the worms and reswallow them too. The meds will be cleaning out the system so it is normal to see more worms in the stool after a deworming. You'll want to keep the stool cleaned up. The store bought dewormers may not be as effective as the ones you get from the vet. I suggest for now you can use the dewormer you have, but as soon as you go to the vet get some dewormer from him/her. They can also do a fecal check to see if there is more ova present or if there are other worms.

Hi Newfiegrl,

I noticed your dogs name, Koda, that is the name of my son's blood hound!!! Small world!! Not a common name for a companion I think. Take care Peggy :)
