Another one...

Whenever anyone goes to the front door and puts shoes on, or even just goes near his lead (god forbid they actually pick it up!) Rocky goes berserk! He jumps off the walls and barks his head off! He doesn't stop barking until we're half-way down the street, but if we're not almost running, he carries on, like he's yelling "Come on! Let's go faster!" When I have to leave for work at 7, walking him before I go is a pain in the arse, 'cos he always wakes my neighbours, and I've had complaints!

Can anyone tell me how to shut him up, save putting a sock over his nose?!

Oh, and telling him to stop, even if he understood, wouldn't work, 'cos he's deaf, so it'd have to be some kind of gesture? And just to make it more difficult, I can't give him treats as a reward, because he's on a special diet.

My advice to you is to "desensitize" him to the things he sees as clues that he is about to go out. Go to the front door, but don't actually leave. Put your shoes on, but don't go anywhere! Pick up the leash & carry it around the house. Put it down, pick it up, put it down, pick it up, etc.

Never reward him by letting him go outside if he is barking. Make him sit by the door & be quiet before you even open the door.

I tried that, but he just wont shut up!! It was literally 15 minutes today before I gave in just let him out, it's deafening!! But after all that barking he must have had a sore throat 'cos it stopped as soon as we got out, didn't carry on like usual.
I just bought some treats that are for sensitive stomachs, so we'll see if that helps. Shove one in his gob and run! :D

Ta for your help

What I recommended will take several weeks, if not months of hardcore training on your behalf. Just lots of patience & persistence will be the key to "untrain" him from his bad behavior. Don't give up! :)
